Agree about the need to re-test ALL drivers. As a young driver, I was helping on a children's holiday one summer and had to drive somewhere in convoy with the holiday leader. I was really distressed to find I had to break the speed limit to keep him in sight - and when I challenged him later about going at 40 in a 30 limit, he just said he "drove at a speed appropriate to the conditions". Really? At the head of a convoy of cars containing children not our own?? He had to find another cook for the next year's holiday.
I'd like to think I'd pass a re-test, but would have to learn to reverse park first; you didn't have to do it when I passed, umpteen years ago! And if I failed, I hope I'd have the humility to accept the situation, or have some lessons and try again.

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Cold and foggy and I wonder why most Grenadian's laugh when I suggest visiting Britain.
May well need your help Chicky, as I failed a trial maths paper yesterday. Unfortunately I did not do A-level maths, so will need to do a short OU maths primer. I so want to do Astrophysics, as I have always been fascinated by stars, black holes and the origins of the universe.
As for driving, I have to admit, that I have never been able to reverse park. It can take ages for me to find parking spaces, OH finds it hysterical.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team

My point exactly.
It's always seemed crazy that cars over 3 years old are tested via MOT every year, but we can pass our test and drive for 40 . 50 60 years or more without every being retested.
Most accidents are caused by driver error, not mechanical error.
I think all of us can say " I know X would fail if they had to resit" ( my Hubby included I'm sure )
When I worked for Children's Services and drove as part of my job, carrying children and/or parents, we had to have a driving assessment every three years - it was carried out to the standard of the Advanced Motorists test - pleased to say I scored 'excellent' every time.
However, having watched Pa's driving deteriorate to the stage where bro and I had to tell him that he must get rid of the car, I am very aware of the slippery slope. Although OH is a lot younger than I am, he doesn't drive (his choice as he was once in a bad smash) so when I stop driving we will be dependent on public transport etc - that's one of the reasons we chose to live here rather than further out into the countryside where I lived when I was younger - we have good bus service to the city and the coast, and a mainline railway station within a 15 minute bus/taxi ride.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I'm good at parking - so far. OH not so much. We've had some cracking prangs involving him and parking. No idea how he does it. So many radars about these days I'm even good about speed limits these days. Given the changes in rules and new signs I reckon everyone should have a refresher course and test every 10 years except for youngsters and oldsters every 3 years.
For the first time in ages we have no frost and a whole half millimetre of rain. Quiet pottering this morning, Thai pumpkin soup for lunch and then we're off to Les Herbiers to fetch my broken sewing machine and raid an outlet store for shoes, boots, slippers....... Possum arrived home at midnight last night so is having a lie in with the kittens. I was good and didn't let them in till 10:30.

As a doctor I had to undergo regular "assessment of fitness to practice", so re-doing your driving test does seem reasonable.
My only concern would be that the government would see it as a great tax raising exercise.

I'm more concerned about the competency of drivers on the road, of all ages.

I haven't had a chance to read back yet. Will do so when I get to bed.
