Trousers knickers and pants are plural because they used to be made of two separate tubes of fabric with a drawstring threaded through at the top to go around the waist. They didnt have a crotch seam - a bit draftybut more convenient in some circumstances!
Hence a 'pair of trousers'

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Oh Hosta hopefully you'll be able to really relax and unwind in the warm - are you taking some good books to read?
Pdoc - curling up with a good book while the snowflakes settle - sounds perfect - it seems a bit early in the year for snow, but perhaps not where you are?
Ma used to quote an old saying 'Ice in November to bear a duck ... nothing to follow but mud and muck.' meaning that a really cold snap early on will be followed by a mild winter. Have you had any ice that ducks can walk on yet?

Sounds idyllic Pdoc - I've only been to Sheffield once - we were visiting a former tutor of OH's who lived in a lovely area - there was a main shopping street and then a wooded area up the sides of a cliff - I'll ask OH the name of the main road when he gets back from work. We drove there after staying a few days Castleton and I remember the view of Sheffield from the moors

Good morning. Sunny spells here for the moment but showers and then proper rain later on.
I spent yesterday sorting out my new sewing room and just 3 cartons of books stash today and all the curtains we brought that should fit here. There are non at the mo as there are shutters but I like curtains for colour, acoustics and cosiness. They can wait though til we find some good curtain rails.
In Belgium we would often get snow during the last week of November and then it would get mild and soggy for December and then very cold for a few weeks in Jan/Feb. One year it stayed below freezing right into the first week of April which is a shame as I had a friend from the old BBC GW boards staying with her daughter. In 2010, the rellies came for OH's 60th at the beginning for December and we had 2' of snow which was a shock for them but very beautiful.
We have brought our winter tyres as a form of insurance on teh basis that if we'd left them behind, we'd have needed them.
Hope OH's mission is successful Chicky.
DD - your main problem with clothes may be the differences in UK and USA English - trousers/pants, jacket/vest, vest/undershirt (singlet in NZ) and so on. Also why do we have so many words for a jumper/sweater/pullover........... Good luck with house and café project.
Hosta - hope you're all packed up in the garden and ready to go and leave your treasures.

Thank you Dove, that is the perfect explanation.
Morning all.
Another night of less than 4 hours sleep. This really is becoming a habit.
Haircut at 9 then polytunnel , as it's chucking it down and none too warm.
Thanks for the warm wishes re hols.
Hi all.
Pitch dark and snowing here, definitely a curl up with a good book day.
Have a good one Hosta, I am getting desperate for some heat, but have a bit longer to wait.

Dove, we are quite high up on the moors going out of Sheffield and we nearly always get some snow in November.
No ice on the pond and no ducks for a while either.

Good morning all,
Hope everyone is well.
Enjoy your hols Hosta. Did you see the program last night about sleep issues?
Sorry Tetley I can't read your message. Is there a problem with the messaging link?
I don't think any gardening will be done today. Really heavy showers.
