Actually, thinking about it - that photo was three years ago - the following year Pa had a chest infection so we didn't take him out - we watched the service from the Cenotaph with him.
Ma was very grumpy in that photo - the dementia was beginning to take hold and she hadn't been able to understand why were were taking them out on a damp day in November and she wouldn't let me button her coat up. Once she got to the War Memorial the memories kicked in and she understood.
On another tack - have you noticed that in the summer I garden, but in the winter I cook ... just as well there's gardening in the summer, otherwise there'd be much too much baking etc going on and I'd never get into my gardening jeans
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Remembrance Day service here is rather special. The farming families on the island have remained stable for generations, so the names on the war memorial tally with the names of most people in the congregation remembering them. There's a piper too, for added poignancy.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
In Belgium, every village has a memorial with the names of those killed as soldiers or resistance or deported for slave labour in both wars. Very poignant reading. Their families are still there to remember them and wreaths get laid on them all.
Those look good Dove. I like to bake too but have a new, 90cm bottled gas powered oven to contend with so haven't dared yet as I'm used to a normal sized electric fan oven. It's been great for crisping crackling on roast belly pork but I did a tomato tarte tatin for lunch and it needed an extra 10 mins so I might need to locate my oven thermometer to check it before I try cakes or scones. We've invited the neighbours for lunch next weekend so I need to get it sorted.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

Obelixx - I find that gas ovens give a quite different sort of heat to electric fan ovens. Gas ovens give a damper heat because the combustion gives of a bit of condensation.
Dove - thanks. That's a very helpful link and the second comment explains the smells during and after use. Bit alarming - OH was convinced we had a leak - but we are well ventilated and I do use the extractor..
Still haven't found my paint mixing dooberry but the annex is starting to look organised so I suppose it' snot a wasted day. OH is sweeping up hedge trimmings, some very long and some quite fat, but he'll have to wait till tomorrow to use his new chipping toy. Priority tho (he forgets these things) is pulling up dead plants form the beds round trees and shrubs and removing the ugly weed membrane so I can plant the bulbs I brought from pots I had in the old garden.

Cloud has rolled in so feeling chilly , even moving wood chippings, so I've decided a cuppa , some toast and make a start on accounts.
OH has many talents, but doesn't know one end of an XL spreadsheet from his elbow so he'll be none the wiser if I've spent all day , or the half hour before he gets home , doing it. Cunning eh?
Good lord! There is certainly some money about somewhere.
Not here however. Definitely not here. But imagine the fun we could have if we did have that much money to throw around. For starts I'd be starting up after school cookery classes for all children in my area. Not only is it an after school (for parents who have to work but can't afford child care) a whole generation who could prepare a real meal that they could take home OR for lunch at school the next day with cheap ingredients would surely change society, at least this little area, no end. Each child would be sent home with an apron, be loaned a basic cooking equipment box that they could take home, and would have access to the Kitchen Cupboard to take home ingredients so that they could make something during the weekend. They'd make their own recipe books to take home with them.
Run it over school holidays and suddenly that stomach curning thought that eats me up in side about what happens to children who have breakfast club and lunch provided by schools would be gone.
Then I'd go on holiday. Just a little one, I'm not for throwing myself off cliffs or spending months trekking across the wilderness.
To be truthful a long weekend in Cornwall every so often and I'd be happily contented.

Thank you Muddle up for your reply. I got that far but thought I had to post the new thread! I do hope I get used to this new format!

In France, at least in this area, every village has a war memorial with list of names too. Each village has a service by the memorial on the 11th Nov.
I seem to have been doing paper/computer work all day, except for when a friend called round. Not raining, should be outside.
Haven't seen any memorials here yet Busy. Couldn't find info on services online. We'll be better clued in next year but I did watch and observe the UK ceremonies. Two years ago we went to Ypres and Tyne Kot and that was incredibly moving - http://s211.photobucket.com/user/Obelixx_be/library/1411%20Ypres%20and%20Tyne%20Cot?sort=9&page=1
