Rased bedding area with a wall by the House was in fact, not hardcore
House half of it was 6-12 inches of heavily compacted yet lovely topsoil with red ash underneath, then there was a very clear dividing line splitting the bed in two. Front half was beautiful topsoil all the way down - I stopped digging my test hole at two Spade spits. Dug it over and raked the lot in under an hour. Can put my holly bushes in the nice half, and then sow annuals direct in the bad half. Only soil improvements I’ll make is to add some rotted manure once the bushes are all in.
Just mixed in the topsoil I bought with my own compost in a new bin, now I got 220l of lovely stuff that’s going to be a real treat to use for everything from potting on the planting out.
You have been busy Learnincurve - GWRS too - always good to keep a job to do tomorrow - a real incentive to get a move on tomorrow!
We dug over the raised wild patch area this morning - pulled out as much bindweed as we could and will dig it all over again in 2 or 3 weeks time - no doubt the ugly bindweed will rear it's ugly head as soon as I have sown the wild flower seeds in April!
I am so tempted to sow seeds in the unheated conservatory/greenhouse but I am determined to wait until the impending cold snap has passed over our way and then perhaps I can sow without using the heated propagator.(?)
GD , do agree , in fact we are away in March so have decided to sew seeds when back in April , hopefugly it will have warmed up a bit , it was on 3 degrees today when I was in Garden
mission hide the ugly and fix my council house’s garden after 60 years of neglect continues. The gap in the first picture is because my budding magnolia is currently hiding in the hallway.
Edit; oh for goodness sake the pictures showed upside down after being the right way up before. pictures next post.
Sort of dug out a perennial pea plant, root was mighty and lopped it off a few inches down. Will see if it reappears. I liked it but a bit too much stuff in that border now. Have got some young p/peas elsewhere in a difficult area.
Collected some stones and rubbish and put one of my mini-greenhouse frames together so I can start some seeds in the house, today snap dragons.
Did a bit of weeding while my car was defrosting, chopped the tops off some tulips and an eremurus, also got some actual weeds.
Gave the birds second helpings and washed a few feeders
