Bit fed up with chain saws and shredders for this year GD. We thought we'd finished til Doris rolled in.

It goes straight on the garden somewhere.

I just want to get digging and planting. I've got a shrub budget to spendimage

    Ah now, Verdun image

I thought I'd  have a look around a few good places in the area.

    I've already been here http://www.swinesmeadowfarmnursery.co.uk/

and got another Sarcococca, they have a bit of a collection, some nice plants generally, I'll be back there.

Then I need to go here http://www.rasells.co.uk/

Have been moving plants in the garden: some crocuses, an echinops that was in the wrong place and some peonies. I've also pruned the potted buddleia and I've noticed that the soil level is rather low. Can I fill the pot with compost or would that be detrimental to the plant? Could I plant some other flowers in the same pot? Here is a picture:

Also, I would be grateful if someone could identify the following bush. It is being eaten away by a small green caterpillar. Anything I could do? Thank you.

    the shrub is Viburnum tinus.

re the potting I'd take buddleia out with its rootball and put the new compost at the bottom and down the sides if there's a gap , not good to put it round the stems.

when it starts growing other plants will be shaded out

Thank you, Nutcutlet. The Buddleia didn't grow too well last year, just a few branches, but I've read somewhere on this site that I should pinch out the new shoots. I'll try that when it starts growing.

Had time for a little bit of pottering today. Pruned the rose, buddleia and a few other bits. Spread some muck around the rosa rugosa hedge I put in last year and then went for a walk image

One of the annual chores done today - cleaned the polytunnel. It needs a new cover really, but I want to get either a bigger tunnel or a proper greenhouse. Budget doesn't allow either at the moment but it doesn't seem sensible to spend a few hundred on the old one so I just keep washing the mould off each spring and buying the lottery tickets image

Sowed a few hardy annuals while I was in there and fed the overwintering chard. Too wet to do much outside today

Had a fab day yesterday! After spring cleaning the house from top to bottom - the rain had stopped so I ventured outside.

I pruned the branches off a Tamarisk that was old and in the wrong place and also went mad with my secateurs in the front garden. When OH got home from golf, he mended chainsaw and took the Tamarisk trunk down.

Replanted that area with shrubs and dug in some small edging box around it.

Friend came and collected a truck load of logs which tidied up the garden no end.

Could hardly move last night image but felt so accomplished! Bit stiff today - but never mind - leaving at 12pm for the airport today for a week in the sun to recover!

  • Most of yesterday was glum but when the sun came out later I hopped out into the garden for some impromptu meddling.

Cupid lost out on its space in the border due to dithering, I moved aster silver spray into that place so it can flop about on the other plants. Moved hesperantha white admiral into silver spray's spot for more sun. Scooped some gloop out the pond, also some couch grass. Got a leech or similar stuck on my hand.

Yes, Tootles, that's hellebore corner that you can see a bit of in the pic, they've been there for 2-4 years, somehow escaped my constant improvements.
