I did a bit more faffing with the little border at the end of the lawn. Hoiked out the second purple hebe (the first one was removed to make way for the little Amelanchier). Put in, and rearranged, some perennials including some Alchemilla seedlings I half-inched from Mum's garden. The rest have been transplanted from my old garden in Bristol.

"What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour".
Been moving all pots with seedlings in as near to the house and shelter as possible and covering other pots with whatever I could get hands on for the next few evenings of expected frost. (Got rid of my little plastic greenhouses end of last year and wish I hadn't done it now - typical silly whim to save space). Been using all old plastic sheeting to cover annuals sowed in borders and beds. Got stung by a wasp for the first time in years when I lifted a pot - it was hiding in a carex. Yelped like a child as I'd forgotten how sore a sting can be but tube of Anthisan to the rescue after a bit of squeezing and sucking to get sting out. Next time I'll be looking more carefully at what I'm lifting.
Planted and mulched some of these little Dicentra 'Aurora' which will spread over time and give some nice ground cover in dappled shade - hopefully!
Been on Allotments every day this week trying to catch up after a much needed holiday. Frost was forecast Tues & Weds night so thought I would be clever & put fleece over my early spuds. Mine are MORE SCORCHED than those who left them exposed! I can only assume fleece held the damp in, which then froze. Can't do right for doing wrong!! On a lighter note, resident Robin keeping me company all day finding lots of wireworm, centipedes spiders plus small worms. Must be feeding a brood in one of the adjacent back gardens.
IanR , must be something about Robins , I have 2 on my allotment , 1 comes to me by shed and the other at the bottom , I also put some meali worms out for them
Just cut front lawns and dead headed daffs , will cut back lawn tomorrow
Went to garden club meeting last night really interesting talk by Robert Chapman on Victorian Violas , he breads them & has won many Gold Medals at Chelsea
Violas are such pretty little flowers, but it seems that the birds like them too - or perhaps it is an insect that attacks the flowers - did he mention that GWRS?
Potted up 48 perennials that arrived today - not sure if they will all survive the journey though. Also potted up a cucumber plant that was already 9 inches tall with 3 tiny cucumbers already formed. Put in two more plants around the pond - I am taking my time, trying to visualize how they will look in a year or two if they all grow.
I love violas and much prefer them to pansies. Mine do quite well in pots but get eaten pratically overnight if I try planting them in the ground.
had a delivery this morning of 6 cosmos and16 hollyhocks so potted them on. Planted out 3 deliphinum pink and 2 calendula. Did the daily lily beetle hunt and removed some of the leaves that are dieing back on the allium. Then went into town to stock up on bird seed and suet blocks. Poundworld are doing 2 suet blocks for a £ and a bag of seed also for a £. The seed is petty basic but I mix it with sunflower seeds, nuts and suet pellets bought from lose from the local pet shop.
To see a world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wild flower Hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour.
Hello , yes I prefer violas to pansies and use them in pots I usually get some from the likes of B&Q and I treat them as annuals , however , he was talking about treating them as perennials, we bought 3 for a 12 inch pot , they where much busier than the one I usually buy . Planted them this afternoon with a bit of bone meal for root growth
Have to say never had them eaten by birds or slugs
Planted some Potentilla Palustris and Ceratophyllum in my little pond. Unbowed 3 Berberis thunbergii helmond pillar too. Though I'm a little disappointed with them, little soil in the pots and they look very unloved don't think I'll be ordering from Jacksons nurseries again...
