I've been out weeding one of my borders for the first time this year, sunny but with a chilly wind.

Why does no-one tell you that alliums, though beautiful, seed themselves all over the place! I love Allium Christophii, so have re-planted some in pots to grow on - hopefully.

Nice day here so a lot of the old tops from last years flowerings got shredded A few brambles cut down and shredded also. The last lot of compost made last year looks good.

Guesrnsey D I usually sow my first tomato seeds in January, they go in the kitchen window, so actually late for me, when they are pricked out, they go into a heated greenhouse for a while, then into the unheated, one. also going to start off some more sweet peas, have already done an autumn sowing.  So, thats where my new rhubarb crown went I bought last year then haha!

Oh, and edible peas as well, they will stay in thehe greenhouse, they can be direct sown, but I find it better to sow into modules first, then you know what you have got, the variety I have can be sown every month, just need cloche or some protection in the coldest months.

Edible peas - great plan. I need to get mine started too.

  • Today I go to Dobbies.  For compost (or topsoil)and whatever they have on the bargain section, and possibly some new anvil loppers if they have any at a reasonable price.

Took delivery of some silver queen holly to go on the raised platform of hardcore in front of the house, (waiting on thier female counterparts) going to have to dig in the compost with a mattock.  I’ve decided that this area and the bank are going to be for holly kept small and compact, hopefully in ball shapes.  Got 7 different variations in various stages of being delivered which is going to be fun planting if the ground decides to freeze solid.

  • No gardening for me today recovering from yesterdays exploits. Had Acer man in again to finish winter pruning we actually took one out & put back in a big pot as it was struggling where it was. Will give it some time to  recover & then try to find a better home for it. Might find a it a home in the front garden if  I ever get round to a much talked about re-vamp there.

    AB Still learning

  • I wish I had an Acer man - I am really struggling with mine - had them 3 or 4 years and they look awful.  In fact I have recently repotted them into larger pots and may well copy an idea I saw on here to cover them next autumn/winter to help them to make a more drooping shape.

Today I spent two hours watering and feeding trees and potted bulbs.  Some of the daffs in pots were drooping from lack of water, so that should revive them until the rain (or snow) comes next week.  OH did some digging in the veg. patch.

Acers , hello , got 2 in pots , 1 is ok , other got wind damage , has been in g/h over winter will need to find a sheltered spot if it is to survive , lovely trees

  • I have topsoil. Also four DA roses that were about a fiver each because they look a bit battered. Ironically they look less battered than the roses in my garden.

Expect a “I’m completly ruinied because I spent  6 hours bashing hardcore” post tomorrow.   Just have to keep repeating to myself that it will look good when it’s done and a lot better than wussing out and concreting the area like I had planned.
