I live in Calgary Alberta, next to the Rocky Mountains. It is the end for us, but we should have had our first frost a couple weeks or more ago. Frost on my roof last night and down to 0 tonight. A hard frost is forecast for Wed. Snow can already be seen on the mountain tops from here in the city. I like to cut the cannas and dahlias down before they are mushy. But we have probably had the longest frost free days this year, in many decades. We have been bumped up to growing zone 4, so climate change is warming southern Alberta up permanently I guess.
I see Johnny, I've noticed changes in the weather here over the last couple of years, we didn't get a proper hard frost until the new year this winter, winter before I had begonias flowering into December, its seem to be more very wet / floods and windy in winter than cold weather recently. The temperature last night got down to 3C but meant to get warmer next week, so hopefully will get dahlias flowering up to the end of October.
How long is the growing season Calgary Alberta for tender perennials like dahlias and cannas? I plant mine out very late May / June.

June 1st is the last expected frost date here, but I took a chance this spring and planted the second week of May. I did start dahlias and cannas in early March in my heated greenhouse. It was so hot and dry and then the turn around. After the second week of June we had thunderstorms every afternoon and daily tornado watches. Calgary has a crazy climate.
We need some pics johnny, these mountains covered in snow! This thread has gone from did you do any gardening to the weather, who cares, all facinating stuff, I have taken some dry runner beans out of their pods ready for next year,, (yes they were already dried in the conservatory) Oh, and brought in my Sparmania, mentioned to Hubby last night, because Saturday night was 8d, this monring was shocked 4.9d Sorry I dont understand those frost "zone" things,
sorry finger slipped, we are in SE England, inbetween the South Downs and the Sea, I found a frost callender on-line says my last frost would be early April, but "tender" stuff goes out first week in June, I wouldnt risk it any earlier, just in case. Have spoken to folk who live nearer the sea (I am 10 minutes by car)they put their runner beans etc out begining of May. I retired almost exactly a year ago, worked in a town nearly 50 miles away, (Redhill) which was officially the coldest place in Britain, I worked nights, often came out (staggering after a 12 and half hour night shift) to a thick frost October, and right through April, stat said it was 3d colder that the rest of the UK.

I would post pics of the mountains and my flower garden but I use photobucket, and I have tried to figure out what I have yo do to post on this site a few times but have given up. I admit I have little patience for having to figure new things out when there is nothing broken with the old. I especially bore quickly with computer stuff.lol
I tossed out and chopped all my portulacas. There were 15 smallish pots in a three level plant stand. Each level pulling out so I got a cascading effect. It was an experiment and I was very pleased with the look. Doing it again in the spring. Dug up half my mirabilis tubers.
Picked all my neighbours tomatoes and put them in his basement.
