I've had a really productive day but still wish there were more hours (and more energy) to get my never ending list of things done!
We put some wire up to grow roses up a wall. Tried to repair patches on the lawn where my other half has got completely carried away with his new weed extractor. It's a great toy, but the lawn now looks like a rugby pitch with huge holes everywhere! Planted some chard. Planted more tomatoes in the greenhouse. Planted a cucumber up in a grow bag. Then did the usual greenhouse dance where everything gets shuffled around to try and make more room... and a few cheeky snails and slugs are evicted!
spent the day putting up frames for the beans and to support the nets over my brassicas. I tried following the 'just pick the caterpillars off when you see them' advice in my 'how to grow veg' book. I got thin green sticks with not a single leaf in sight. Now I net them at the first flutter of a butterfly wing. And last year all my bean teepees got blown over so this year there has been some serious structural engineering.
We shall see.......
Gardening on the edge of Exmoor, in Devon
“It's still magic even if you know how it's done.”
I've been planting out sweet peas today. I have tried to out-wit the slugs, and any other hungry creatures, with a combo of copper-taped planters, bark mulch and netting (I don't use pellets). One batch have gone into an experimental position using an old leggy Lavender, which only has foiliage on the top quarter, as a climbing frame. The Lavender was going to be 'recycled' this year but it will have a reprieve if the sweet peas survive.
Think it's raining all week so I'll be dashing out when I can to 'check' for slugs, pinch out, tie-in etc.
I had a very busy day yesterday, realised it was Thursday and the day my brown bin was to be collected (it was practically empty!) so jumped out of bed and started cutting back a huge bush by hand, within an hour i had it filled, then onto weeding the garden, and then continued with my war with the ground elder! followed by cutting the grass, and hoe'd the rockery, all of which i managed to get in my neighbours bin - which i am so thankful to be able to use!
Anyone know how to get rid of sticky willie?
Had neighbours young cat come for an explore - think it was interested in my sparrows, but too many trees for herto get a clean go at them, My dog Tess was delighted, she loves cats, wants them to be her friend, little cat was pretty brave and wasn't too scared of Tess who was lying by the rockery watching her, came about 2m away from Tess but ran away when Tess wag'd her tail in sheer delight lol!
needing to find my tape measure so i can get on with making my raised bed in the front garden.... maybe i'll manage that this weekend? Thankfully one job i don't need to do unlike you AuntyRach is slug patrol, 1 - i dont have anything i need to protect from them yet and 2 I have a wee friend for that, my little Hedgehog
Put some of my seedlings out for the first time this weekend, it only occurred to me this week that it was the middle of May already...normally I have tonnes more seedlings and am forced to put them out due to space constraints.
Potted on some new plants that I don't want to risk in the borders with all the tough stuff. Had to rescue a newish actaea today - I'd been watering it but it was actually bone dry. Planted some other things out and moved a cirsium, Blue Trevor. He is part of my New Plan, a mighty move around and pond re-jig. I can't get anything else done for that project apart from musing but he was getting over-ran by the hedge.
Planted out a thalictrum I had to rescue from the snugs, never noticed a thalictrum getting chewed before?
Alliums and camassia starting to open now, lots of little bumbles on some new dark blue cams...thinned out some rosebay w/herb from the moth zone and cleaned the water bowls.
Busy day today. Planted up 3 hanging baskets and 8 pots. Had to lug most of them around so that was hard work. Lawns mowed and edged and lots of weeds removed. Deadheaded the geums and put some more gravel around the pond.
Had a lovely weekend gardening. Only just come in - beaten by the lack of light!
Only a few baby plants left in the greenhouse.
Broad ad beans tied in.
Runner beans and mange tout in and going strong.
Beetroot seedlings transferred to the raised bed.
Tommies in the greenhouse looking good. All tied in and fed. Doing an experiment of using tomato pots in a grow bag, and straight into the grow bag to see which ones grow better.
finally coffee corner coming together...but no time for a coffee! Will have my breakfast there tomorrow!
Took Caryopteris cuttings. Bought an Origanum 'Hopleys' and split into 6 small plants to grow on. Attempted to split a new Geranium 'Rozanne' straight out of the pot - a bit of a disaster!

"What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour".
Too much. I have now planted up most of the new plants I have bought recently. A few alpines and my "Viburnham Burkwoodii" .
Done some weeding. Mended the sprayer, glyphosated the messy weedy corner at the side of my Wendy house. No option, It will get on top of me before I can do anything if I am not careful. Found a stem of mares tail to be dealt with tomorrow.
Offered some surplus plants on freecyle.
Took some cuttings of a Rhodanthemum "Casablanca" as some side shoots broke off as I planted it. I have no idea if they will survive but "nothing ventured" etc.
Rescued three dwarf geraniums which were disrupted and potted them up to grow on a bit.
This frantic gardening has to calm down soon. Off to bed shattered and achy again but I like my garden.
