Victoria‘s post inspired me to stop putting off laying a gravel path I dug for the last time the ground was workable, which I have now done, now on a brew brake before sorting out grow bags and moving my potting table and whatnot In the back garden - I have one of those strange corner houses where the back garden is tiny and the front is enormous and very very visible to a lot of people, this is made worse by the cut through for the entire estate being at the top of the road. I had some rubbish ready to go to the tip and a random old man at the bus stop went “have you shifted that pile yet”. So no pressure then.
This “hot” weather is nuts, last two days I’ve been doing all the things I would have expected to be doing late feb early March in Derbyshire.
Just been out in brilliant sunshine this morning here in Bath, Somerset - very gingerly as recovering from a recent major op, but reckoned I could kneel down and hand rake leaves off some of the flower beds - again! All was well and I was really enjoying myself, then I realised I couldn't easily get back up again - stomach muscles not fully in working order yet, so that was a bit tricky and OH out of sight somewhere in the house.
BUT have got some snowdrops ready out - the Russian ones which are always early and lovely deep pink buds on some hellebores - really cheered me up and I'm just itching to get back in there and get started on the New Year's gardening. Slowly, slowly as they say!
It was quite pleasant here this morning, a bit of sun and neither too cold nor windy , so I was able to get outsde for a bit.
Carted away a pile of cut grass left over from when we had a sudden snowfall, just after I'd cleared it and planted a couple of packets of lingering bulbs.
Not much, but made me feel a bit better about the garden! There is so much that needs to be done and it is absolutely sodden, though I did go out two days ago and and re-cut the little ditch that drains some of the spring water, so it isn't running over the grass any more. I could cope with the water if the ducks didn't dabble in it and turn it into a muddy mess!
Went to greenhouse at 8am to cut salad leaves for OH's lunch box not sure if that counts as gardening -more like harvesting. Going to check on cage netting on Allotments to see if it has survived the winds.
Picking up storm debris, luckily only twigs and small branches. Scooping out dead leaves from the pond and feeling frustrated that we can't do more in the garden, it is just too wet and the soil is already sodden. So we spent most of the morning Spring cleaning....zzzzzzzz
I had to dig up penstemon as it was planted too close to front path anyway, but after the wind it had collapsed over it. I was enjoying being in the garden but it was too windy.
Victoria - yum yum! That photo of your gin made my mouth water! I haven't had a drink for over a year and I am missing the odd tipple!
I got out into the greenhouse today. Checked on my sweet pea seedlings which are looking fab. Chuffed to be back in the garden, even if it is a bit at a time. Miscarriage number three for me just after Christmas so we've decided to have a break from IVF and it feels utterly amazing to be drug free and back out in the garden. The wind this morning felt exhilarating.
Planning on doing some gentle tidying up in the morning, and maybe a little pruning of one of our little apple trees. Also going to read up on how to grow the perfect lettuce! We had some iceberg with our tea and I'd love to be able to grow one.
Tootles - I'm sorry - that's really tough . Great that you could get outside and breathe deep.
I only seem to be able to grow lettuce in pots - too many pests when it's in the ground. Cool temps, free draining soil and keep up with the potting on seem to be the key things.
I wandered around today squelching through the muddy grass, picking up the broken bits of trees and shrubs and not much else. It's just too wet to be on the soil at the moment . I may get the chilli seeds going on the windowsill at the weekend - beginning to feel that need to crack on

First proper gardening day if 2018
Cleared up and sorted out back garden, and layed down my galvonised steel vegetable bed.
