Just planted a fastigate cherry tree (Prunus serrulata Amanogawa) which arrived on Christmas Eve together with even more tulips.. Can't wait for spring as I've planted an unbelievable number of bulbs this year, many of which I'd forgotten I'd ordered!
Accidentally dug through a few existing bulbs while planting, which is inevitable of course.
Also noticed the double snowdrops I planted several weeks ago are peeping their noses out of the soil - those came as dry bulbs so wasn't sure whether they'd do very well as I usually buy 'in the green'.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
They were young trees ( 15 years old , ish ) , so did it with Hubby.
It was the first row in our woodland behind a "hedge" of thorn and spindle so the hedge should thicken now and it'll also let more light through. In theory.
A glorious day here, so hoed over the raised bed ready for covering once all the weed roots have been removed. We cover with black polythene to help kill any weeds until ready to sow in March or April depending on the weather.
Worked a bit more on the pond - nothing to show, just removing yet more stones and trying to work out the stream/cascade area - tricky to do on my own.
Picked some more lettuce leaves for meal & played with the cat!
Hard frost the last couple of nights so ground is frozen down to about 2-3 inches and 4 inches of ice on a bucket of water I used to soak the bare-root roses a few days ago. Had a couple of 'crunches' around the garden to spot bulbs coming up but unable to do much else. I decided to count the pots of bulbs I planted to be used as 'fillers' when I spot bare areas in the borders and the totals was 56! Also have roughly half that many potted shrubs ready to be planted in the spring.

Mild and sunny so down on hands and knees clearing a 6 inch layer of leaves off a border. . . . snowdrops etc buried under the leaves. Spring flowering plants starting to show growth.
My goodness Bob, you have got your work cut out when the time is right to plant out your pots. You certainly are well organized.
Sorry to all those who are affected by freezing weather - it is almost unheard of to have frosts before the New Year here, but again one is forecast for tonight - sunny days often cause frost overnight.

I've just been out and cut down 13 ash trees. That's next winter's logs sorted and more light into the woodland.
Ash is in my opinion the best wood for burning, wet or dry, doesn't spit.
13 trees, you must have had help, it would take me a day to do one.
also a good opportunity to plant the glade that you have created.

At last I've planted my last 2 bags of tulips! 24. Did some weeding and cutting down first.
Hyacinths in the ground
Gladiolus planted as well
Bought a bag of compost
Bought Dahlia saplings and planted.
Bought a new chrysanthemum.
Placed order for daffodils and gladiolus
Dug, divided and replanted tuberose clumps.
