It's all sounding good in your garden Victoria Sponge.
We started to clear the fallen Chestnut tree in the field yesterday, stripping off all the small branches and twigs ready for shredding. Today, our trusty neighbour helped us to cut up the thicker stuff and remove the logs ready for splitting at a later date. Another neighbour took all the odd shaped wood for his fire. It was all hands on deck but had most of it cleared in an hour.
Glad to hear you got your tree squared away without too much hassle GD
GWRS, the manuka I moved is called Donna, it's about 6', I can't think if the flowers are pink or burgundy...supposed to be tender but I've had it against my house wall. However, it took over the little bed and the path. I've got an 'original flavour' white flowered one in the front though with no protection from the elements and that seems to be doing fine so I'll see how it goes Bees love them and they look great when in flower.
Meant to plant up a couple of beds today now the frost has defrosted but it's grim up north today, somehow getting rained on is colder than the actual cold. Washed some bird feeders and re-stacked the bags of poo and that's about it.
GD & VS Thanks for compliments re the Moss. It's traditional ground cover for a Japanese garden but in the usual way of all things gardening it proves surprisingly difficult to get it to grow where you want it to rather than where it decides to grow. No surprise to all of us with Moss infested lawns! When I told the senior gardener that I might have some to bring in I think he was expecting one or two clumps. When I brought in 4 seed trays worth on 2 consecutive weeks I think he thought all his Christmases had come at once. I have never seen anyone so happy to receive something that most other people are trying to rid themselves of
On a proper gardening note I decided to dig some extra parsnips at the weekend. I have put them in damp sand in the shed. I think it's going to turn mild now but after the previous weekend I didn't fancy having to dig them with a pick axe on Christmas eve in case we got more frost than snow. No such problems with the sprouts I now harvest them by cutting the whole stem with the loppers & I pick off the buttons at home as we need them.
Shredding twigs and branches today in our field - we filled 4 black sacks with wood chip. It was lovely weather and as usual I did far too much and am now now stiffening up!.
It’s been a lovely sunny day got up to 4 degrees , went to allotment this afternoon for a couple of hours , harvested , parsnips , sprouts ( not very big this year ) , leeks & jureslum artichokes , a bit of tidying up as well
With the ground warm up from frozen managed to get some last min crocus in from farmer gracy been on hold for for 2 weeks nice big bulbs though cannot wait to see the display pic below shows colours
The promise of things to come James, they look wonderful don't they.
Not too good today, so let OH do the twig shredding in the field whilst I spent most of the day on Christmas things. He managed to fill 3 black sacks and still more to do another day.
Love Spring Guernsey Donkey2 seeing the bulbs already rising from the ground gets us through these dark months with working I only see the garden weekend to weekend at this time of year
Well, I had a look again -as I do -on my way out- to see if anything was poking out of the soil. They are! It gives me hope in these dark, depressing midwinter days.
Someone mentioned helibores on another thread. I'd forgotten about them. Will have a look tomorrow - in a gardenerly way of course.
