I signed up for my first allotment last week - REALLY excited! However there are 2 people ahead of me on the waiting list, so I fear I may be waiting for some time . Still, I will carry on enjoying my 10 x 10 back garden in the meantime. Will carry on planning my allotment until I get the call!!
TyCerrig...Depends how big the allotment site is, I was 8th on the list when I got my first plot but there are 80 plots on our site. Got it within weeks of applying but never got a response from the site at my back gate for yrs, about 6 plots on that site though...
A good plan is to put your name down for a number of sites in your area, mine went on four sites...
What is the little tree in your picture in the black bag?
Hi Gardengirl. Thanks for your warm welcome. Sorry for the delay in replying but I have been enjoying sunnier climes over the Christmas/New Year holidays. I arrive back in the UK on Monday after 3 weeks in blistering heat. It's going to be a bit of a shock to the system.
Anyway, I hope you are right that the tree I asked about is a cherry tree. Love cherries . I will ask my plot neighbours when I meet them.
I live in Leeds, been here for almost 5 years now. My plot is in a small allotment in Headingley. It's about 18m x 12m and at the moment is full of couch grass with that one tree in the centre of the plot. Before we went away, I managed to clear a 1m wide strip along one of the 12m boundaries. I've planted some 2 year old fruit trees that the missus bought - 2 apple (Discovery and a Pippin), a cherry tree, a Victoria plum bush, and the Conference pear tree that you had noticed in the bag in the photo I posted. They are all dwarf/semi-dwarf rootstock. I really hope that the recent stormy weather hasn't damaged them. They were all tied to some pretty heavy duty stakes so I hope that did the trick.
I'm looking forward to getting back on the plot, probably next weekend, lots more clearing to do. We are hoping to use about half the plot this year, and leave the other half under a thick layear of manuer and plastic for a year, but we'll see what happens. Plans change all the time.
Hello all, I must of hit don't notify me as came on to have a look loads of posts
TyCerrig: great that you signed up for a plot so exciting 3rd on the waiting list is great, I don't know what number I was to start with on the waiting list until I checked a good few months later then I was 8th only took a few months after that. Check after a month see if you have moved any on the list (if not offered a plot yet) shows you are keen and if council they don't mind, On the site I am on plots seem to be checked and more come up this time of year
YerMan: your plot is about the same size as mine, nice choice of fruit trees, nice to be some where warm for a bit, couch grass () grows through manure - as my plot neighbour had a delivery of manure used a bit left a lot then moved far away with a big garden so gave up plot the horse manure sat for a long time and then it made a mound of grass with big roots in for new plot holder, so put down thick cardboard if you can or just cover with black plastic so the light does not get through
Scroggin that shed looks so good and nice lot of snow on it, looks good with window film on - at least you can get inside your shed unlike me and mine yet has taken a long time to build, going to carry on with shed after a bit want to get digging done first going to start next week hopefully
Zoomer44 not your shed that is terrible can you fix it or get neighbour to help fix it - damn weather - I am still harvesting spuds and most are useable just not the ones that got blight on
Ginagibbs have you heard any thing about shed re roof?
Posts
Forecast is mainly dry here tomorrow and the snow missed us, so hoping to go to plot in the morning.
I've a few jobs which don't involve digging to do.
Have a good weekend everyone.

Woops. Don't know what happened to the formatting on my previous post, but I can't seem to edit it now.
Nice shed, went to the plot and the roof has blown off mine and one of the doors has come off?.
On a positive note, I dug up some spuds, didn't: think they would still be edible but they have peeled ok..?
