I've just finished watching that episode of the Instant Gardener! I thought that was a lovely family and it is one of my favourite episodes.
I didn't even go to the plot today with all the rain and thunder, though I should probably force myself to go and scatter more slug pellets around, or I might not have any asters or sweet peas come the morning.
I did go and just as well - slugs all over the place. A chap on one of the other plots told me the slugs ate his potatoes in two days. They've had most of my pea plants as well (what the mice had left, that is), curse them! I've now run out of my third bottle of (organic) slug pellets, so it's off to a GC tomorrow. I just hope this year is really an exception and not the new normal.
Wish we had rain, another hot day, water butts are evaporating and one bed is cracking
Went after work today to plant out some pumpkin and butternut squash, they are every so tiny but will fair better in the ground than in modules. Mini pop is doing well, I'm doing 'the three sisters so planted French beans to climb up some plants and dwarf beans around the edges.
Noticed apples forming on one of my trees. It must have blossomed and set fruit whilst I was away.
Hello all , didn't get up to plot this afternoon ,kept having showers and some times heavy , hopefully going tomorrow , so no strawberrys for tea , hope they are still there ?
Gardengirl Heritage pea is called Alford Climer , Alford is a town in Lincolnshire Wolds
All nice and dry now at the plot after all that rain. Potatoes have flowers on so should be ready to harvest soon. I have harvested my over wintered onions a bit early as I needed the space and they looked almost ready to go. I have filled the bed with squash and sweetcorn now. Peas are forming at last and I have had strawberrys most days (straw under them makes such a difference!). Harvested most of my cabbages as they were getting eaten by slugs. made a batch of Sauerkraut and some coleslaw. Have a good weekend everyone
Had a nice day visiting Rydal Mount and Dove Cottage. The gardens were nice.
Just been to the plot to water and pick some veg. I've started to harvest spuds. Tasted a chilli grown in the GH, it was really hot and they aren't ripe yet...
Scroggins sorry about the storm , hope everything recovers
Went to plot this morning got pear tree in and putting a thick layer of bark chippings down to stop weeds
dug up some more swift potatoes which I said ealier not done well
planted a row of kale
o/h picked , what turned out to be 6-5 lbs of strwawberrys and this afternoon turned most of it into jam while I did some planting up in garden
picked more broad beans they have done really well this year
last year planted clover as green manure dug it in before hols and planted a bed of leeks and sprouts obviously I didn't dig it in properly or it is to vigorous because both beds smothered in clover o/h weeded the leek bed , still to do the other one , so be warned about clover
After the longest day weeds are supposed to grow less vigourously unfortunately my weeds haven't read the same book......I try to keep cleared ground hoed but it's a continuing battle.
Two apple trees with fruit have had their June drop, I'll be lucky to get a couple of pies between them... one has black spots in it's leaves... any idea's what it is...
