I agree with Hosta. I know it means more work, but the result will be worth it. Think of the climbers you can put on the wall! You need to plant 12 to 18 inches from a wall as it can get dry at the base.

You say it's 15" deep, IMHO you'd be stuck with perennials, no problem there, but you want structure , so you really need shrubs too and 15" is, IMHO too narrow.

Be brave, be bold and the ground is soft at the moment image, make it deeper. You'll not regret it.

That is a beautiful wallTootles but like Hosta I worry if the border is a little narrow. What are you planning on planting?

Oh tootles I didn't even see the other replies!  You know us by now; the more space for plants the better! image

  • You could make it a bed for annuals or more cut flower opportunity I like the wall so would not cover it  - nice pic even upside down

Tootles  , alternative suggestion , leave the border narrow and grow plants up the wall as it looks so nice image

Lovely wall so I'd leave some as backdrop and some for supporting climbing roses or ramblers trained on wires.   Definitely widen the border too - at least double or treble width.

Still no gardening here.   It's blowing a hooly and driving rain too.   Even the ducks are sheltering!

Thanks so much for the feed back. I'll widen it then. I was thinking I'd plant less varieties and more in numbers as I've made the mistake in two other deep beds of putting in too many individual plants that don't mix well. I've plonked those obelisks there to think about height. Is there a dunce list of front and back plants? For example, I've got some lovely lupins on the go. Are they a front or rear of border plant and what goes well with them?

    Thanks ever so much!
