  • Woo2 Its going to an electric propagator shhhhhhh its meant to be a surprise only the husband's has let it out of the bag! Your weather sounds so magical we just get boring rain although wouldn't want the thunder.

The fitter is here putting up the GH soooooooo excited never ever had a GH. Got so many things to go in it as growing cut flowers too this yr. My orange wheelbarrow and shinning rake arrived yesterday.

Zoomer I'm growing aubergine for the first time- only 7 seeds in the pkt which was 2.99 please germinate. Are they difficult to grow?

Weyplotter.......electric propogator you lucky thing. Unfortunately I can't get electricity to my GH as we have to cross over a neighbours garden to get to it. I can feel the vibes of your excitement re your spanking new GH, so  pleased for you. I too am going to grow some cut flowers this year, just getting impatient to get started!

love the idea of an orange wheelbarrow image

  • Weyplotter, I grew Aubergines and peppers a few years ago in my GH. Hope you have more success than me, they were very small, not sure if I fed them enough. Great that you have your new GH to play in!image Father in law gave me an electric propogator, I use it in the kitchen to get stuff going then move them to the GH when the weather is warmer.

  • I grew peppers last year with mixed success- I chopped and froze them. While I wasn't disappointed with the quantity, I was with the size- certainly not the size you see in the shops

I will still be doing them again this year though image

  • me too, never give upimage

When do you normally start using your propogator Gina, which seeds do you start off first? I'm tempted to invest in one to use indoors image, just so much work/DIY going on  indoors, scrabbling for space!

Fruitcake, think I will give the peppers a go too image

Not very successful with peppers, the one's last year were small and thin, so much so I thought the labels had got mixed up with the chilli one's until they were tasted and had zero heat, so can't really recommend a good variety. Chillies - apache are prolific and cayene ad jalapeno produce good crops, they all dry well. I sometimes cheat with chillies, sow some seeds and also buy in one or two plants.image  .

I bought aubergine seeds in France last year, they are very generous with their seeds must be at least 200 seeds in the packet-Violette longue hative. I find aubergines easier to grow than peppers, seeds need sowing early though as they like a long growing season.

I'll be starting chillies and aubergines off in the next few weeks but both are slow to get going, they don't usually put on any real growth until they go out in the GH.  .

That's not cheating Zoomer, I'd call it  hedging your bets image. Do you use a propogator at all for your early sowings?

Now I'm going to embarrass myself.....don't think I've ever eaten auberginesimage

I use a windowledge heated propogator and sowed everything in it the first year but have now realised by April time most vegs will germinate in a tray with a plastic cover in a warm room near the window.

Woo - you need to get out more image Aubergines are nice in Mussaka, fried in batter or cooked in the oven stuffed with a veg/tom filling .
