Think I am going to the allotment shop on Saturday morning, even that is exciting even though I will have to wait a bit a year or so for an allotment yet, I will take a camera and have a wonder around nosing at people plots
I've been after a pallet since about two days after getting my allotment keys, because I wanted to have a go at vertical gardening, and thought that I'd plant strawberries in it. I'd given up on finding one that would fit in the car, or didn't have to try getting back on the bus.
Today, BINGO! A van doing some work next to the allotment had a pallet on the back of it. I asked and I got it
just a pity I planted my strawberries into a bed two days ago lol
just gotta think of what else I can plant in there now
Hello everybody been to the allottment this afternoon , bit worn out , dug the roots of a tree up on my new extended plot after cutting down , unfortunately it was badly deceased so had to go , to make things even more difficult it had grown around a metal spike , the ones you knock in the ground for posts
on a posative note my wife picked some beetroot, carrots , apples , marrow and 1 quince
Think I'll look out for a local supplier too and get an azada. Looks an interesting piece of kit to clear ground with.
Looks like the top half of my new plot will be coming vacant. The guy has been sent a letter and his time runs out on Thursday. He has done nothing to it for months.
I'll get first choice, makes sense to have two half plots on one site so if offered I'll need to decide whether to keep the first one. I'm a tad bit reluctant to give it up after building a fence and keeping the weeds down all summer.
Zoomer, the tenant of the bottom half of my plot may be getting given notice too, but I've decided I do t want that plot as we would have to clear all the crap that she's dumped at the bottom of it. If you're going to take this other plot on, then check out first what you need to get rid of beforehand
will you really need to give up the first one?
Once you've started with an azada you'll never look back!
Fruitcake, savoy cabbages lol thanks for your enthusiasm, I know I will enjoy the allotment once I get going properly, know there will be lots of help from here .
Fruitcake, I walk through the top plot to get to mine. It's over grown and needs structure putting in like paths...and is over run with rasberry canes, some brambles and nettles.
Fortunatly there isn't anything which can't be composted or recycled. It comes with yet another wheelbarrow, compost bin and various plastic bins and tubs
I could keep the first plot for a further year as the soil is really fertile but there's only so much veg a person can eat and preserve. The jury's still out on that one...
Fruitcake - I guess you could grow bedding plants, lettuce, herbs - lots of small plants in the pallet that don't get too big
Zoomer44 you could have taken over the whole site before you know it - making it all look more tended too. I guess it does make it easier to make one large plot, how far away is the other half plot - the other end of site?
Zoomer do you get bark chippings on your site that would make paths pretty quick to the other half of plot, As long as the tenant doesn't rush back to the site and clear stuff up - you will end up with some goodies
GWRS sounds as though lots of grafting was done on the new bit of allotment and had a good harvest as well
GG - the other plots about 100 yrds down the track, not far really. It's in the middle of the allotments which is really nice because most people say hello or stop to talk when passing.
You can't be seen from the track on my new plot at present, it's on a slope and like a secret garden, you practically need to wade through under growth to get to it. The rasberry canes have taken over at least a third of the top half and the bendy path down to mine is only the width of a wheelbarrow. So I've had it a few weeks now and only seen the guys on the neighbouring plots, twice
Wood chips sound a good idea but no we don't get them, worth checking out if there's a local wood merchants though. I'm considering grass paths.

Best place to get wood chips is tree surgeons particularly if they cut and shred trees/bushes
Thats who supply ours , they are pleased to get rid of them
