Hello everybody , in Southampton going on Holiday tommrow so signing off for a couple of weeks

Stagbettle , have you thought about adapting a shopping trolley for carrying tools ?

Fruitcake did you actually see the Fox , my dad when he lived in Birmingham use to feed foxes with any old bits of food or stuff you would put in bin , sorry to say that included chicken bones , old cat fund ect ect

  • Have a lovely holiday GWRS, going anywhere exotic?image

Working today and looking out at blue sky. No gardening for me. Tomorrow is supposed to be a wash out so will get spring cleaning indoors instead.image

Still waiting for my poly tunnel to arriveimage

  • Happy holiday GWRS image

i haven't seen the fox yet but know it's there. I can smell the poo image

the chicken run now has a roof! And thanks to 5 million cable ties, my hands are really rather sore. Think the moisturising gloves will have to come out to play tonight image

I have been trying to figure out how to prune three rather large gooseberry plants, so thanks to you tube, that's my next task. I have also narrowed down the guess the raspberry type down to three contenders- summer, autumn and ever bearing. Narrows it down somewhat lol. Someone said that I should have pruned them right down as they looked like old wood but the ones I have not cut down all have new buds on them, so I have decided to leave them as they are so as the year goes on, I can try and work out what type they areimage

While I still have some time off work, I think my tasks will be to do anything I can at that plot non-chicken related so that the rest of the plot doesn't end up getting neglected

Weather looking ok in the morning so if I can drag myself out of bed early enough, I'll be making a start on gooseberry pruning image

    Happy hols GWRS

Gina...a polytunnel on its way! How exciting image

Fruitcake....roof on chicken run.....not long before chook ready then! We lost a poorly chook  last weekend, now down to two, will buy another couple when the weather gets a bit warmer.

thanks to all who answered my question last week....just nice to know where everyone is and how long you've been veggie growing.

Replacement piece of glass arrived this afternoon for the greenhouse so will be put in tomorrow and then ready to organise the staging etc.  We had a few periods of rain and hailstones today so no work done outside but caught up on the housework. Family meeting up for breakfast out tomorrow then we will go to the garden centre to stock up on compost . Hoping for nice weather next weekend as I have a whole weekend without any commitments so keeping my fingers crossed. image

  • GWRS have a fab holiday haven't even booked ours yet.

Gina polytunnel sounds exciting  maybe in the future I might consider as far too much to do at moment.

Managed to edge all my beds didn't think carpentry would be such hard work! hoping it will last a few yrs.

Can you believe it we have the water turned off in the winter months I know it makes sense but how are you meant to water the winter planting? Only discovered this when planting my fruit trees and no water coming from the tap. fortunately there was enough in the tank, so didn't have to do the rain dance!

Builder coming to put the green hse up so excited as got lots to go in there.

Woo2 what sort of staging are you having? I've made some from pallets so until the GH is ready (Tue) I'll be buying some more staging.

Q do you use your own compost for seedling and do you add anything like sand? First time ever I've managed to make 'proper' compost since shredding everything. So am planning to use it for my seedlings must admit I'm a bit nervous.

  • I went to the allotment this morning to make a start on pruning the gooseberries. Turns out there are four plants and not three like I thought, and there are raspberries growing within inches of the base of one of the plants so that will have to be dealt with. It's tempting to lose to gooseberry plant because I don't really need FOUR of them lol

Rest of today and tomorrow are a write off weather wise image

  • Weyplotter thanks for the info on the saw looked it up does look like it would be a little heavy but then most of them prop are, good you do not have to use it all the time,  great you got you bed edged

Weyplotter re compost I use brought seed compost, I not sure it is a good idea to use home made compost  as lots of weed seedlings can come up does in ours when I put it in the border things like tomatoes, you could use it on beans the large seeds then you can tell if any weed seeds come up  well that is my thoughts

Fruitcake I understand the Glastonbury mud look been to the local area for the conservation day to do the litter picking and there were lots of slide - ee and squidgy areas where people have been walking a lot

Woo2 hope the weather is nice and dry for you next weekend, Sunday will be beginning of March -   defiantly seed sowing time

Ginagibbs polytunnel sounds good when up you will be able to keep dry if it rains and seedlings will get the best light to grow

    Looking good Victoria!

Weyplotter.... I've got one aluminium staging with the wooden slats which is currently in my old decrepid greenhouse, my son bought it for me the Xmas before last. I also have managed to pick up some aluminium staging on a local items for sale page. they are the type that is just framework that you slot in your seed trays. Unfortunately it's a bit battered and bent so we are going to put in our own slats as the trays don't fit securely. I'm also waiting for a new one to arrive, due in March, that was free when we bought the greenhouse. Think we'll have plenty of space then to grow what we want to image.....just need some green fingers!

Weather has been terrible here today, constant rain! Hope you have all fared better!

Gardengirl......I'm also hoping next weekend will be better, can't wait to start sowing!

  • Victoria- looking good your plot looks like you have been working hard. What are you planning to grow?

Gardengirl- I see what you mean, I also use seedling compost to sow but will try peas with my own and for potting on toms and of course for pots in bags too.

Woo2 So lovely when you get presents that you really want apparently my son is buying me a propagator for mothers day-hurry up MD I need it now!!

Weather was lousy here too yesterday, nice and sunny so far although rain is around the corner.
