When we were clearing FIL's shed a couple of years ago we came across a box of incandescent light bulbs in their original packaging. They were very old, rather large and were something like 200w.
They were sufficiently old that they had instructions on the side about how to operate them (turn light switch to on) and gave different instruction for mains AC and DC currents. Also guidance about maximum usage time (they probably ran very hot!). Suspect they dated from the 1950's - maybe earlier.Β
With great reluctance I agreed OH could take them to the tip (not really my battle to fight). It was only as we were driving home that I realised that somewhere like the Beamish or Bliss Hill museums would probably have welcomed them as part of the stock for their mid 20C hardware shop / home / business displays. There were some other gems too - he didn't throw much away...

I've taken down the Christmas tree, decorations and cards. They are now in the study, feel too wobbly to go up the loft ladder at the moment. It wasn't hard Hazel, and I have been taking it easy.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Gosh T'Bird, you brought back a memory there. I can't even remember how long ago I visited Beamish but I loved the experience. I remember the horrors of the dental surgery and then going down the pit which was quite claustrophobic along with many other reminders of our past in the packaged goods found in the shops there.
Busy, I'm pleased that you did your indoor jobs and don't worry about getting that stuff up into the loft.
Cacoethes: An irresistible urge to do something inadvisable
Busy, you've done well not to over exert yourself todayπ Room will be a little bare now all Christmas stuff taken down but you soon get used to it. Ive done very little this afternoon, extreme fatigue and not feeling right. Hope it's not the beginning of a bug. We've been to Beamish many times over the years, wonderful place. I believe they are or have done a street from the 50's which will be very interesting to compare the perceived idea of those days and the reality of having lived through them.π
I'm signing out too folks. Brother has been on the telephone and advised that an Auction place are clearing mumβs house next week of everything so last minute( wanted) items have been listed and will be put away until our next visit and then the house will be ready for its next residents. I only hope they have as good a life as we all did in that home and that they will be as happy as we were. To new beginnings for all.π
Oh Hazel! I may have had a speck of dust in my eye then. Remember so clearly clearing out the family bungalow 25 years ago. My brother had lived nowhere else until he moved out at age 18. I had but was far too young to remember. So many memories - so much sentiment - some good - some bad - such is life. Such is the lot of adult children. I'll raise a glass to you and your family π₯ x

Like T'Bird, I was very touched by your news Hazel. My family's
lives were such that we never lived anywhere longer than three years
with Dad's various postings but I do remember feeling like that when we
finally had to put Mum's bungalow on the market and doing the final
emptying and clearing was hard. Thoughts are with you and your brother.
T'Bird, I was wracking my brains trying to remember your last exciting holiday similar to the one you are going on in March. Will you have lots of 'on board' illustrated lectures? It must be wonderful to know that you will play your part in contributing to science research.
