@rowlandscastle444, my late father had shingles and @Red mapleis right, it was really, painful for him and took a long time to get over it. Has she received any treatment for it?

Ive rang 111 today re the rash and have to contact a local pharmacy for a consultation for it to be looked at. Going later on today. Then we will pop to a local SM afterwards.

OH has cut front garden grass, it was hard work as it was so long. It's all the rain we're having, going to have to cut it more often.

@rowlandscastle444, I hope your wife is not in too much discomfort, shingles can be very painful, I believe.
    Thank you @Red maple
Wife is very much in discomfort. She's normally so good, and doesn't wince at every ache - which is how I can tell it really hurts.

It will set our plans to move, back somewhat, but these things take time. I'll just have to make decisions without her - which she will not like one bit.

Our grass is another of those that has benefited from the rain - and now could do with mowing. That can wait. Wife and meals first.

I thought it was the other way round - ie you could only get shingles if you'd had chicken pox? So if you haven't had chicken pox, you can contract it from shingles.

Wife definitely hasn't had chicken pox. Doc is certain it's shingles.

I had chicken pox as a child, so was hoping to stay clear of it.

    So much confusion!!

Wife has been prescribed cream and tablets, plus also painkillers (neurofen).
I hope your consultation, @Songbird-2 gives you some relief. Rashes are often more than just an irritation.

Very odd. I thought shingles was like hermes [sic] - the chicken pox virus goes dormant in the body until some trigger point and then fires up as shingles (in hermes' case as a cold sore). But you can't get a cold sore or shingles without the virus already being in your body.

    @steveTu

I've read in different places that you only get shingles if you've not had chicken pox, or in others, only if you have had it.
I've also read that you can't catch shingles, while in others, that you can.

Basically, depending on where you look online, the information can differ from one place to another.

I guess the only sure-fire way, is to talk to a health professional.
But then, where do they get THEIR information from?

I'm confused. I've had chicken pox, some 50+ years ago (not saying how much the "plus" is). So I might be at risk of picking up something - or not!! 😵‍💫

Where have you read that on the net? I had shingles a few years back - and like you originally thought shingles was something you got as an adult if you hadn't had chicken pox before, so was surprised when I got it (as I know I had CP as a child). My doc told me I had it the wrong way round and the NHS and other reputable sites seem to say the same thing - ie the CP virus (once you've had it) lies dormant then can re-appear as shingles at some time in the future.

If you've had CP, AND if your wife has definitely got shingles, then AFAIK you are not at risk (ie shingles doesn't cause shingles - BUT - it can cause CP in people who have not had CP). However, you may then have your dormant virus re-activated as shingles at some point as well.

    Thanks @steveTu
Yes, I've definitely had CP, and AFAIK, she's definitely got shingles. Certainly got the rash, is in pain, and got other symptoms.

Just hoping my dormant virus stays that way. If we both went down (as we did with COVID), at the same time, then it could prove unpleasant.

    Good afternoon all.
Hazel, it could be the powdered washing medium you chose. I use a non-bio gel for all my washing because I am sensitive to the bio enzymes in many washing products.
@steveTu you are right with everything you have said about shingles. You can only get shingles if you have had chicken pox. The public information video shown on TV advising all we 27 year olds to get the shingles vaccination alludes to this too. Jack my ex cat sitter had shingles last year and it was agonising for him, poor chap.

Well, I despair of all things medical.
I received a call back from 111 very quickly and the lady was lovely. She told me the rash needed to be seen so arranged  for me to go a local chemist that does consultations. She would send a referral, for me.
Got to said chemist which is where the system fell flat on its face. Chemist (  an older chap) look so surprised when  I explained , begrudgingly said he would take a look, " if I wanted", mumbled his way throughout, ( I could  hardly hear him) look amazed when I started to show him rash ( which meant a slight unrobing...)  and stated he'd never seen anything like it. I should see the Doctor. Yeah, right, you try... OH came in with me and he was speechless.
LB,  I haven't  used powder for a long time - have to stick to the  same brands etc. I thought I would try a wash or two with some I'd had left over. I'll see what it's like in a few days.
