Yes The Prince is leggy, Marlorena. It showed distinct climbing tendencies previously, so I left it to see what happened, but so far it settled on being a tall shrub. It will need repotting before long, so I’ll wield my secateurs then!
I really like the red and deep coloured Hellebores @Athelas and that’s a lovely one. None seem to thrive here, sadly, too dry perhaps.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Alfie_ it's only do-able with roses that you intend to prune back hard to about 1 foot each Spring.. then you will have a compact but a fuller head of blooms by midsummer..
Is this for obelisks both in and out of pots? So you plant the rose outside the obelisk and train is onto it then in spring to you untie it and cut it back to a foot? In terms of varities then should I be using medium-large shrubs and short climbers? I have bought two obelisks and one to try one in a pot and one in a border. Would that Charles de M rose I got at the weekend be a good candidate? I do have a few 55cm pots which should work hopefully.
@newbie77 - those rose obelisk pots looking amazing.
My Chandos is looking in good shape. I nutured it in a pot and transferred it into the ground in the winter:
Anyone got any good tips for honeysuckle? That pathetic twiggy thing aginst the fence is honeysuckle. Some growth on it but seems to get gradually get worse.
Clematis Armandii is produces huge numbers of buds and blooms:
@ElbFee that prunus subhirtella autumnalis is so pretty and you have had threee flushes of flowers??? I love my ornamental cherry tree will similar flowers but I get one short flush and that's it!
@Alfie_ No, we're not talking about obelisks here, I'm referring to planting more than 1 shrub rose e.g. Gabriel Oak, or PAOK, in a large pot, which is what you were thinking of doing.. You wouldn't want to include an obelisk as well. To keep compact they would be hard pruned each year then allowed to grow as shrubs in the pot..
If using an obelisk for a short climbing rose in a pot, like the Strawberry Hill photo, you would place the obelisk directly over the rose, so the rose is in the middle, no other way you can do it in a pot.. You wouldn't prune climbing roses back to a foot, no. If your obelisk is in the ground, then it's best to plant a rose outside it, rather than in the middle, but it can be done either way..
Oh I should add, Charles de Mills is not suitable for pot culture in my opinion. Choose a modern repeat flowering variety.
About the clematis armandii. Every information source states it is growing on old wood. While Oh and I have the impression it is on new wood.
Thoughts, experience welcome. Because I’m considering to shovel prune. I do not like the leaves and it only flowers for a short flush and a monster to control . I have 3!
@Alfie_ that strawberry Hill picture in the Obelisk you put up is what I’m trying to do with the one I’ve pictured a few posts back. I’ve tried to keep as much as I can of the first year’s main stem growth and have tied it in in “circles” to try to encourage side shoots. I hope some of those side shoots now become long enough to into tie in another couple of feet up the obelisk. I hope to get to the stage in the obit in year 3 or maybe 4.
As @Marlorena says I have one rose in the middle of a sizeable pot and obelisk.
I have definitely seen that DA picture of Strawberry Hill before and wondered if the pot were big enough lol. Beautiful but the way @Tack has it on a trellis looks at least as good.
Did everyone (in Britain) see that Trevor White's potted rose season begins on Friday, coinciding with payday? It feels like a bit of a sneaky move from Trev there.
@ciaranmcgrenera Strawberry Hill is very flexible so easily trained. @Alfie_ You really won't need it fuller than one plant. I do find the laterals grow outwards really fast but are amazingly resilient to wind. It reached 6ft at the 3 year mark (as below June 22) being trained mostly back and forth on a trellis and carefully round the ends. I think round would be better. It is in the ground though in full sun and with plentiful water being next to the tap. I look forward to seeing your pictures as I haven't kept climbers in a pot beyond 2 years.By September it was making a break for it along the washing line

Here it is last spring:

I like your Cherry Tree..

It flowers on old wood. You prune after flowering has finished. It's quite a rampant plant.
