Oh dear I too have been struck by the 'accidental' visit to a garden centre that results in an unexpected purchase.
I had taken Agatha out for a walk with her fox terrier brethren (last Sunday of the month) and once we had finished I felt the call of nature, so hot footed it to the nearest place for alleviation - a garden centre.
I came out suitably relieved clutching a Gertrude Jekyll!
This is a rose I have always admired and I just bit the bullet and bought it on impulse - potted version.
Asking your help, as I got it on a whim and have no idea where to plant it - what's the best conditions (it is the climber, as if that makes a difference from the shrub, as I believe it does both equally well).
What aspect would it prefer? and who else has gone to the loo and come out with a rose?
Gratuitous picture of Agatha (left) and her foxy chums.
I confuse individual photos of pink roses in particular, since I have so many. For general records I take photos of sections of my borders with my iPad and add text boxes with the rose names on @dabolem.
@agnasia I have made that mistake. Not that I didn’t see the large tree in the hedgerow outside my garden, I just didn’t realise the roots would invade so much and so fast!
I’ve annoyingly just decapitated the first Souvenir de Marcel Proust bud about to open when moving the pot and a hailstorm is currently trying to do more 🙄

Congrats, such a lovely rose, @PeterAberdeen. The scent is "out of this world" (as my dear old dad used to say). The climber and the shrub are the same rose, just they choose to market it both ways (like Lady of Shalott) for mysterious reasons of their own. I was intending to grow my Gertrudes as shrubs, but they threw out several very long canes so I eventually put something in the middle for them to climb up. So I suppose mine are half shrubs, half climbers. The canes are quite flexible. I initially pegged a long cane to the ground with wires bent into croquet hoops, but it got snapped by the local cats I think.
Mine get at least 5 hours' sun but I have a friend who grows it successfully in less.
@agnasia I've grown The Generous Gardener and I found it adaptable, with care.. but this isn't something you need worry about too much as it'll be a few years before you concern yourself with training... it's getting the rose transplanted and settled in, is the first priority.. If you're happier with it on the fence, then go with that, but thinking far ahead is not something I do these days, so best run with your own instincts ...
Thanks @Nollie that makes me feel a bit better! It’s silly really but I think because the tree isn’t in my garden I forgot to consider it might still have an effect! Take away the fence and it’s a different story.
Just have to decide where to move GG to. The fern does get quite big and I want to make sure it will be happy in its new home. That large stretch of fence is not attractive so I would like to cover it, but equally I would like something climbing over the pergola as well.
Looking back at @Tack’s posts on her beautiful climbers, it seems that’s GG’s canes are quite stiff, so perhaps not so suited to the pergola?
@PeterAberdeen I can’t be any help except say that I have always admired Gertrude Jekyll so fully understand the impulse buy! Also love the photo of Agatha and her buddies.
It’s called double your money @WAMS! Looking for a climber? Here’s GJ. Want a shrub? Have you thought about GJ.. All in the pruning/training @PeterAberdeen. It takes full sun here without crisping, which is saying something, but also grows into a huge, freestanding beast. Better behaved and easier to keep as a shrub in your climate, I expect. Fragrance is consistently in my top 5.
PS gratuitous photos of dogs most welcome, I feel a pupdate coming on..

1. I have a narrow bed, near to the back door (30cm deep) which although it is narrow is south facing and next to a Clematis Comtesse de Bouchaud, with an existing trellis.
2. Then I have a raised bed next to a summerhouse more open but good sun in the late winter/early spring and not a frost pocket, so could be used as a shrub or on an obelisk.
3. The new North facing border good light, but shaded from April onwards (but due to high wall a total frost pocket). Also far from the door to appreciate the fragrance - as this is a border for looking at from a distance and also the home chosen for the Rose Westerland.
4. Or, I could plant it near the house, just through a gateway, where there is a 5' wall on one side next to an old rockery (now a raised bed) that is south facing, but restricted as far as the roots are concerned.
I quite fancy option 1., but would love to hear from you all with your experience.
Does anyone have James G? Mine is putting out new growth which is very different in places. Here the new growth is lime green:
And in other places the new growth is dark green;
Just wondered if that was normal?
Abe Darby is doing well. When we moved in it was right underneath a tree and had twisted its way through the tree so I cut it hard back and moved it away from the tree in winter. I snapped one root clean off as I was moving it and happy the transplant was successful:
I must have cut several metres off and left it as a two pronged cane. Was hoping it would shoot lower down so maybe I should have cut it closer to the gound? Anyone any tips on pruning before moving?
I must say the growth on my Eustacia Vye I potted up from winter bare roots is incredible:
My slowest is a hybrid musk - Felicia. I bought this at the start of last summer. Growth is very slow. Anyone else that have this? Do you find it slow growing? Here it is (left rose of the two shown here):
@PeterAberdeen you have come away with a truly wonderful rose. It is one of my favouite roses out of 40 odd that I have. The scent is unreal and the blooms are simply stunning. Mine does tend to grow a bit like a climber but it is designed that way so I have it flowering over my pearl bush. Here are some pictures of mine from last year (excuse the building work behind!):
@Marlorena Expected a sunny day today but that too was shortlived.. as the remaining week would be grey and rainy.. rose buds seem to be in limbo..
@Nollie can't wait to see your 'Soul' in full bloom.. mine is just putting out growth and the only bud it had was broken in the winds..
@Victoria Sponge interesting selection of Old roses there.. wonder how much space they would take when fully mature.. or do you clip them short after flowering?
@PeterAberdeen I would put it where you could enjoy its fragrance.. I too bought one just before the end of potted season.. it was no better than a bare root but has leafed out nicely now..
@Alfie_ young leaves are often different from the mature leaf colour.. Golden Celebration does the same thing.. regarding Felicia, I think it was Marlorena who had it.. gorgeous pics if I remember correctly.. try searching 'Felicia' on the forum That GJ looks fab.. from what I gathered, it is not a quick repeater.. is it?
Amazed you don't have Gert, @cooldoc, being such a scent-lover. It's wonderful. Mine are in the front garden and you can smell them from across the road.
