I've had a good day out in the garden today. I have no blooms yet but i do have lots of buds and most of my young, shrub roses are all looking healthy. I do have a couple that have damaged leaves and i'm hoping one of you can tell me what the likely cause is. I couldn't see any pests in the affected area...
Also, i spotted this. I thought it was an egg shell that i hadn't crushed at first but it's clearly not on closer inspection. Any idea what it is? I've got a 4 or 5 growing but it's the first time they've grown in my garden. I can only assume that it's come with the manure i had delivered in February.
On a positive note, we have more sparrows about than ever before and they've done a cracking job on the green fly this spring. It's been great watching them rustling about the shrubs, today. I haven't even had to squish yet!
I've just seen Ronnie O'Sullivan at the garden center. I think he was eyeing up a plant.
I have some little birds tidying up my roses too, it’s great to see.
Fun pic of Agatha & chums! (She is the best one☺️)
@cooldoc, I suppose I don’t have a properly mature old rose, the older ones are maybe 7-8 years. The only one I regularly cut back after flowering is Tuscany on Marlorena’s advice otherwise it gets too tall and then gets knocked over by the prevailing winds. Last year all the roses loved the hot rainless weather and Tuscany put on loads of growth after cutting back and is around 5’ already at a guess so will see what happens this year. My other old roses are in spaces where they currently fit, my two older Albas are around 7’ x 4’ although they get a little lower when flowering. I also cut back William Lobb once in the hope of thickening it up which didn’t work. I might have another go this summer.
Most of the roses here have quite a few buds, but no flowers yet; most advanced are Othello, ORA and DB, all Austins. Here is the proliferation on Othello. I have a small ongoing experiment: I have planted garlic bulblets in some of the pots. So far, those roses do not seem to have aphids on them. Just an initial observation, not an inference or conclusion. There are plenty of aphids elsewhere, like the Westerland below. I don't squish nor spray them, just leave them be. Sparrows do visit, though infrequently, for a meal. I spotted very few ladybugs 🥺
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
Hi @cooldoc, just to say re Palais Biron/Purple Lodge, I do wax lyrical it and about other roses that I love and that do well for me, but I don’t think I’ve highly recommend it, or if I have I really shouldn’t have, in case it doesn’t suit the UK climate. I’m sure it will be fine, but I do always worry about that!
Lady of Shallot yesterday in evening sun:
Talking of Palais Biron, not long now..
Madame Isaac Pereire has taken off like a rocket since planting it in the ground a few months ago. It was in a pot for 2 years prior, so not all new growth!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Im rather behind, hubby and I have some rotten cold virus, so Ive been in bed all bank holiday, urgh. Gardens bursting out though.
Ive had a lot of blackspot issues already but I removed the offending leaves and doused with sulphur rose which has helped a lot, new growth is staying clear. Biggest culprits are Albertine and Wedding day! They are getting a good blast when it wont disturb the bluetits nesting there. Im going to spray the really affected roses with an organic pesticide free spray before we next go away to try and get ontop of it as Nostalgia looks awful.
Tea dousing has paid off, very few aphids on doused roses! The newly planted/ new potted have them as do other plants but the avian armys on duty. Wiltshire with potted tulips Wisteria about to burst out! Worried id incorrectly pruned this, but this is the most blooms its ever had so... Front rose is potted "bring me sunshine", back arbour one is zephrine 'Get every disease going' droughin, which has a bed to itself for that reason... spring sensation female clem on the fence looking lovely. Rosa cutie pie with male clematis 'Kimiko' Rosa des cistertiens & mountbatten behind probably furthest ahead. Someone remind me to BE HARSHER PRUNING in winter, Ive not cut back nearly enough as usual and they are all already very tall. Sheilas perfume, needed pruning more, sulpher rose has helped. Morova Reka pheno geno here spotting v.badly, not impressed so far.
Hi @agnasia, I grow GG over a pergola. Mine is coming into it's 3rd year now and was the first rose that I obtained after being infected by this rose group!! This was April 21, in it's first season Mine put out several normal canes from the base in it's first year but most of it's early energy went into producing one main vigorous cane over 3m long that I gently persuaded over the top of the pergola. Jan 22 This cane has put out numerous side shoots which are now filling out the spaces quite well. April 22 The canes are stiff, but can be persuaded into shape with care. Mine is east facing and canes tend to grow away from the structure. I let the canes grow to gain some length (and flexibility) before pulling and tying them back to the structure in stages, gradually easing them back fully over a few weeks. Up to yet I have not had a cane snap on me, but, of course, saying that I have now tempted fate!! Sept 22 Now in it's 3rd season it is clothing the structure nicely and I am hoping for some of those glorious drooping blooms over the top this year May 23, and from inside pergola Good luck. Owd
Thanks, @Alfie, I'll check at Harkness in Hitchin when I visit hopefully later this month, or June.
Love all your tulips and white clematis @JessicaS. Get well soon btw! Rose des C is just a lovely glossy vision, isn't it? (I don't think I cut mine back hard enough either.) The healthiest roses for me so far this season are the Delbard and Meilland ones, although a couple of Austins are totally pristine: Eustacia Vye, Emily Bronte, Tranquillity.
@WAMS, I think they like to sleep on rose leaves and flowers. I might as well do a PHD on snails
Strangely not many snails and slugs are active this spring in my garden. I have 14 clematis coming up. They are small like a newly bought £3 pot from wilko, except two which are over 2 feets. I had planted these 3 years ago and if it was not for snails, all would have been amazing plants by now. Fingers crossed, these wont vanish again and I will see some flowers this year.
Apple flowers are most beautiful thing in the garden at the moment.

Some great photos owd
A snail on Tranquillity. What are they doing? Sunbathing? Serious question.
