  • @agnasia with Claire Austin don’t attempt to grow it like a conventional climber.  Ideally it needs to be grown up an obelisk or pole so your pergola should be fine.  If you try and grow it against a fence or house and train it like other climbers it tends to look messy.

Not many aphids here, but I think the birds have been taking care of them as I saw some on COY midweek, went to squish at the weekend, not an aphid in sight!! Hopefully not famous last words from me 😆

@WAMS I’ve spotted some blackspot too, little bit on climbing blue moon but I think those were old leaves I hadn’t removed, and some on mary delany, will pick them all off at the weekend

I think I may soon need to procure a potted Bring Me Sunshine.
I recall that last year, following it's introduction, there were some teething issues and many here were dissatisfied with it for various reasons.
How do you feel with it now?
Just another day at the plant...

Hi @Nollie! Thanks for your reply. I’ll do as you say and wait and see, so far the roses are doing well but I guess that’s because the tree is new too. It’s a small ornamental I think it’s meant to grow to 2-3m.

What did you use as a root barrier?
That’s a pretty small tree then! Since they were planted at the same time the rose should have time to get it’s roots down and established without undue competition. Cherry roots spread out laterally and will eventually be similar spread to the mature width of the canopy of the tree, so planting distances may be a factor in future. If you find in time the tree starts to overshadow the rose though, it’s easy enough to move rose further away later.

I used recycled plastic tongue and groove decking planks sunk behind the raised beds, but that’s probably not desirable or practical in a normal border 😊

Thanks @rossdriscoll13 that’s really helpful, sounds like it would work on the pergola.

@owd potter DA sent me a replacement after mine died, so far it’s much better than the first plant I had!

What made you buy that nice looking rose?  I'm always interested to know the reasons behind our choices..  I've not heard of it before..

A few reasons, Marlorena. I originally placed an order with Lens because I wanted Darlow’s Enigma. The colour of Violet Hood appealed and since hybrid musks are a bit of a Lens specialism it just seemed rude not to try one of their own! I’m always interested to see how different classes of roses do here so now have those two to add to Buff Beauty.
