April weather in full swing here, rain,
sunshine, hail, sunshine, thunder and storm. At least the soil gets a
good soaking.
Liked your rain forest comment, @cooldoc . Summer vibes now. Rose came with the house. I call it
fragrance Queen. Spend my summer mornings with my nose burried in it.
Augusta Luise with friends.
Eyeconic with Hot Chocolat, Eugène
Fürst way back. An early victim to BS.
Sourire d'Orchidée, what a lovely name
for a lovely rose.
@SynUSA way ahead with those buds. I am
more Team @PeterAberdeen, hardly showing foliage. Curiosity made me
check how much further North you are. Hamburg is about the same latitude as Liverpool. That's
probably why the Fab Four kicked off their career in Hamburg ;-) I dig your digging. Nice big area for a lot of plants.
Continuing the educational path,
triggered by @Nollie 's comment on Palais Biron. Does anyone know if it
is named for the German Duchess Biron and her Palais in Baden-Baden
or rather for the French Duke of Biron and his castle in the
Dordonge?
Lady Hillingdon died of thirst last
August, left about a square meter of roots. Had a lovely pastel
yellow.
The German palace, I believe @ElbFee, even though it is from a French breeder, Pierre Orard. I’m sure I read that somewhere and will try and find the reference..
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Itching to get on with pampering my new roses, but I fear I'm at risk of smothering them to death with too much love. I sprinkled some organic Vitax rose food in the pots at the start of the month, and I'm wondering when it's time to feed with Uncle Tom's Rose Tonic. Any suggestions much appreciated!
How nice is your garden, @Elbfee! Don't know about these tulips yet... I buy some different ones every year, grow them in a pot and then dump them near the rowan tree. Most seem to come back because it is dry and a bit stony there I suppose.
@ciaranmcgrenera excited on your behalf. LoS is always in bloom from May till the end of the year here.
Caved and bought Lavender Ice which was £6.
@Herbloom I was given a kindly lecture about overfertilising new roses by a grower. She said it was better to treat 'em slightly mean than to risk overwhelming them.
What a strange year, so far. I agree totally with the Sycamore seedlings - though mine too are maples. But there are hundreds, also still digging up Spanish Bluebells - it is like playing Whack-A-Mole.
Another strange thing is some of my lilies (potted ones) are also coming through. Bit early, isn't it?
Not very often you hear 'Eugene Furst' get a mention.. I've had this rose many times, always let's me down with poor disease resistance, but the blooms are just wonderful, dark red/crimson and the scent most people admire.. in fact, back in 1986 at Mottisfont, it was the first rose that brought my attention to the old fashioned type, and I nicked a bloom off the bush and sniffed it all the way home..
I've not used Uncle Ben's rose tonic, but I'd go by what's on the label, I imagine from April onwards.. I've heard it's good though.. I like to feed everything here regardless of age in my high PH..
'Lavender Ice' has gorgeous blooms that live up to the name..
Blowing a gale here again, light evenings coming up thank goodness, and a bit warmer next week..
o/t... is anyone here using something called ChatGPT? if so is it worth downloading? I've got Microsoft Bing which I understand is similar and I've asked it some questions just for a bit of fun.. the answers were quite good actually.. although I asked to name me the best red rose and it came back with 'Munstead Wood'.. lol..
Someone asked upthread (sorry can’t remember who) whether it was too late to move a rose that was showing signs of growth. Well I was planning on moving my Golden Celebration, but focussing on other garden tasks and the earlier warm spell/sudden growth explosion has caught me out! Hmm, shall I be reckless and move it anyway? I guess the worst that can happen is that it will wilt or sulk for a while..

Are your Guiseppe's perennials, @WAMS.
