Thank you @Nollie! Your roses are beautiful, Soul looks magnificent. Interesting that Harlow Carr’s colour is different to usual - are the weather conditions similar to last year?
@ciaranmcgrenera your GJ is looking fab, lots of buds! I would love her in my garden, but she’s so thorny.
Does anyone else grow Emily Brontë? Over the last two years I get an amazing first flush but she doesn’t then repeat on me, it’s like she’s exhausted herself. Last year I did forget to do the second feed so that may be a factor. I also find she grows very upright and tall, chucking out some long canes at least 6ft but with no flowers on them.
Emily Brontë
Wollerton Old Hall is looking good
Albrighton rambler doing well too, I just wish it was a little more vigorous.
I got Emily Brontë in August last year, @agnasia, and she bloomed modestly, continuously but sparingly, till winter. There was even this really unusual bloom in October that was pink verging on lilac, nothing like the usual Emily blooms (but it smelt the same).
Mine hasn't put on any real height yet, though- just getting some red upward shoots starting now. Could those long canes of yours be trained climber-style, do you think?🤔
Gorgeous roses there @Nollie .. are you sure its chlorosis there.. some of them do have a pale leaf..
@agnasia EB is with me since sept 2020. Good for fragrance and not great for flowering in my opinion.. Does take a long break.. and yes, the habit is tall and straight compared to other Austins.. For pots, I feel Eustacia is perfect with those wide bushy growth..
Cooler weathers does make them more pinkish or hold on to the initial colours longer @WAMS even Elizabeth tends to do that in cooler weather.. 1st pic in August and next one from November..
One youtuber from Florida had posted his Elizabeth.. it is pure white with no tinge of pink at all..
@ciaranmcgrenera something to look forward to my GJ once matured..
I planted two hulthemia roses at front of this bed, same size in the beginning but now one has grown backwards. I hope it will recover, I loved those so much.
Hostas looking good so far, some blue pill protection is given in desperation.
@agnasia yes probably the weather, it’s been very changeable. It’s not gone over 30c yet (thank god) which is when roses tend to pale in heat or turn magenta instead of remaining red or purple, but it’s got pretty damn close!
Definitely @cooldoc - gone much paler of late inter-veinally, with the leaf veins staying green. Chlorosis is a regular issue here - mostly on Austins and some old roses - in my very alkaline soil and extremely hard well water.
No such problem with Astronomia, with it’s glossy, dark green and extraordinarily healthy foliage. The only foliage issue this has is that Bill likes to cock his leg on it! In a few days it will be smothered in blooms:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.

@cooldoc I love Helmar, very regretful that I didn’t plant any this year.
Good luck with your GG @agnasia.
Thanks @Tack, I expect your roses will be superb this year, as always.
Ah @cooldoc I remember you are a scent hound! Here’s the current state of play with Soul..
And a few more bits and bobs..
Blue for You with a potted own-root Munstead Wood behind. The latter is slightly different in habit and blooms to the grafted ones:
Marie Pavie taking off:
Harlow Carr, interestingly the blooms seem paler than usual for early season:
First bloom on Indigo, looking a bit squished and getting early chlorosis:

Work is still fairly busy but I try to have some time every day to read posts and go to my garden.
