So many beautiful roses you all! This year is not my most lucky one for roses, what with the rain and various pests.
Today I noticed the Midnight Blue with 3 flowers and lot of buds. Actually I thought it would be darker, but that is its first bloom since I planted bareroot last November (from TCL).
@tack Thanks !.. I have 2 Wild Rover's, 1 is clean but the other, the larger one, has some blackspot lower down.. you have more blooms on yours right now.. it's the only thing that lets it down really I have to admit, but I'm less troubled by it these days, but when it breaches our tolerance levels, it's decision time.. You have so many beautiful roses you probably won't miss it too much..
Agastache's are great for dry gardens, I should have them here.. I did once, 'Kudos Coral', but I didn't take to it.. Those look interesting Nollie.. Terranova do some great plants..
Lovely roses everyone !.. and great photography too..
..a few from this afternoon.. 'Cornelia'.. half of it.. one of my best roses.. 'Scented Garden'.. first bloom and a rose I like very much.. short climber to 6 foot.. ..sorry, I couldn't resist and I don't have many roses in full flush..
@cooldoc I was interested in you saying that your Gabriel Oak was lasting over a week despite the heat. I have one in its third year in a pot. It’s placed near a brick wall, mainly so I can smell the fragrance as I sit nearby. Unfortunately I’m finding the blooms are going over in about three days. I see yours has a wall in the background but maybe not as close as mine. Any opinion on whether I should move the pot elsewhere although I’m rather loathe to do so?
@Nollie sorry to hear about the beetle attack. I had a few buds completely eaten by something but not that many.
@Eustace thank you for an update regarding Louise Clements. Peter Beales says it’s very fragrant. How long did you have it for? Maybe scent will improve with age?
Finally more flowers opening in my garden, including MW. It’s gorgeous! The only downside for me is that flowers are facing down. It would’ve made a nice standard.
'Dr. O'Donel Browne'.. an old Dickson HT with a fabulous scent, reminiscent of the best of old roses.. 'Kathleen Harrop'.. 'Tall Story' /'Marie Nabonnand'.. 'Directeur Constantin Bernard'.. unusual, sweet scent, lilac tints.. ...just a view.. Peony 'Buckeye Belle'.. Imperata 'rubra'..
The first of my bare root purchases from TCL is in flower - it's Munstead Wood. What an incredible velvety dark flower... almost no discernable scent though, but do I gather this is often the case with a rose in its first year?
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
@Liriodendron The scent from roses varies with the time of day and the weather you are having... warm sunshine brings out the scent. Even the best scented roses can give next to nothing during dull weather or during the evenings...
If conditions are right, you should get the scent on that rose, even a first bloom..
Gorgeous rose photos everyone; I can keep looking all day long 😜
I have taken a few pictures in my garden today after being away from home for 2 days; so many buds have opened. I'll post the pictures tomorrow. In the meantime, a few photos from the rose garden at Dunham Massey. I was there today, had to ask many people where the rose garden was, before I found it. Unfortunately I was 2 weeks early, so most of the roses are still in bud. Harlow Carr had millions of buds, I would have loved to see it in full flush. Enough rambling, here are the photos. Most of the roses were covered in buds, but couldn't find a label for many. Loved this Violacea, nice deep purple with a golden centre. The rose below is James Rennie Macintosh, iirc. This is Ispahan. These 2 roses were so very gorgeous, 😍, but I don't know their names. The roses on the arches were all tied so very meticulously; I'm sure they will be a sight to behold when the roses are flowering. There were lots of rhododendrons still flowering and lots of irises too. Tree peonies had finished flowering. But these meconopsis were awesome.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
