the secret to fuller rose bushes is to ditch the fertiliser and use pony spit.

Horse manure is a fairly safe bet, for good roses, yes.

Your 'Boscobel' is gorgeous Pete,.. just the right colour.. I found with mine it sometimes turned a strange salmon colour which didn't appeal to me too much..

Your no i.d. rose is 'Windflower'.. an older Austin..  very pretty isn't it?.. and scented too, at the right time..

@Mr. Vine Eye what comfrey are you growing? I grew some years ago that was rampant and I vowed never again, but it speeded up composting. Seeing your home made comfrey juice is inspiring

    Hi all,

Firstly, I’m loving all the gorgeous pictures! My wish-list is never ending now.

Secondly, could anyone help me identify the issue I am having with my 2 new Zephirine Drouhin which I purchased to go over an arch. I got them from Peter Beales around end of May and up until the last couple of days they looked great, had lots of new growth and around 5 buds each but I’ve just noticed these weird leaves near the top. Is it fatal?

Sorry about the bad photos my OH took them for me.

    Thanks!

Hello..  no just a bit of mildew on the leaves.. you will have to get used to this sort of thing with this variety, it's rather prone to it..  just snip off the worst affected..
When your rose is more established, which can take a few years, you may notice less of this.
I note you got these roses in May, which suggests they were potted... Potted roses in early summer take a long time to establish and quickly dry out.. dryness at the roots promotes mildew...
What I would do is get a bucket of water or a 10 ltr watering can, fill it up, and pour around the base of each rose, 10 ltr each.. a full plastic bucket is usually 10 ltr.. if you happen to have any liquid feed, like miracle gro or liquid tomato fertilizer, mix in appropriate amount for full strength..

I suspect the rootballs are drying out..

Try not to worry about it too much, it happens with this rose unfortunately..
I should add.. I don't spray roses, but you might want to consider spraying this rose at some point, as a form of routine.. I cannot advise on sprays as I don't use them..
