Spotted first bit of colour on a bud! It’s coming from Vanessa Bell. Quickly retreated after that as the rain started, I’d only just stepped outside. Seems set to remain rainy for the rest of the weekend.
@PeterAberdeen, I think it is Halcyon hosta but I am not sure. It was bareroot, opened packet lying outside a closed Lidl. Some plants make remarkable recovery. I managed to divide it and have two now.

I love it - A Lidl reject. Well, look at it now. I tend to agree with you that it is a Halcyon. A beautiful specimen, whatever its origins.
@WAMS thank you for sharing your experience, interesting that she’s behaving differently for you. That bloom is beautiful, I love how she fades but I wish she held her colour for a bit longer. I do wonder if I could treat her like a climber and perhaps add a support behind, I’ll see what she does this year.
@cooldoc sounds like she is similar for you, I like her fragrance too. I’m glad I have her in a border and not a pot. I’m also a fan of eustacia’s habit and looking for something similar for my pot. It’s fascinating what a soothe weather can make.
@WAMS I love rosa des Cistertiens too, mines got a touch of the spot but the new growth is glossy and lush.
Speaking of, anyone wrestling blackspot... Sweet Syrie has apparently never heard of it... that rose is immaculate, always! It never gets it, so noticeable. Albertine and wedding day seem to be the spotty source currently... change from powdery mildew, so my airflow improvement works helped anyway! Im going to have to spray it, ive picked a non insecticide fungicide only one that dosent harm insects. Sudpect its not clearing dead leaves in winter but couldnt for various reasons. Big prune/ tidy and clear post flowering then...
Anyone going to Malvern RHS show? Im joining my parents for a daytrip, looking forward to it. I saw the rose society is exhibiting. @Marlorena is it worth joining as a non breeding hobbyist?
Some spring colour as picture tax... thats a montana up my cherry tree and as many buds still unopened!
Thank you @zugenie, more than happy to (over) share, though I’m seriously in need of some company now folks. Please give the weather and your roses a stern talking to!

Yes we shall continue to enjoy the delights of your roses Nollie.. ours in UK I think are like buses, we wait forever then a dozen come along at once..
@JessicaS Hi Jessica... I'm sure you could join the Rose Society if you wanted, no need to exhibit.. I'm not a member and never exhibited anything, so I wouldn't know further on that.. I used to be part of the Historic Roses Group.. now chaired by Michael Marriott ex-DA.. they still send me emails and invites.. but that was more my thing.. Malvern Show would always be worth seeing wouldn't it.. love to go but too far for me.. Hope you have a lovely time and come home with lots of plants... your garden is lovely as ever..
Indeed, 3 weeks have gone by really
fast. I am done with sleeping in a rooftop tent for a while now.
@Nollie, I looked into a combination of Namibia and Botswana. Since
my focus is on 4 legged or winged wildlife I decided against the
rather long detour to Namibia. If OH likes scenery as well, Namibia
is probably the better package.
I am really impressed how you all seem
to be able to keep the area around the roses free of other plants.
This is what I came home to. I have some serious unveiling to do.
My Louis XIV has died. I went
immediately online to reorder, filled the cart to the brim, only to
realize that Louis will only be available as potted plant in June.
Quite proud to say that I deleted the whole cart. For now. Even had Soul in there, before I remembered that its colour looked quite
washed out when I last saw it in my climate. But if you are looking
for discontinued DA's you might want to check if they ship:
schmid-gartenpflanzen.de
OT on hosta, @PeterAberdeen, if you are
looking for a blue one that does not get as big as Halcyon, you might
want to look at Blue Arrow.
Gave Ghislaine a hard prune this
spring. Look at all the new green.
There will be flowers, lots, on my tree
peonie that tries to take over my terrace. Btw in German it is called
pentecost rose.
Cannot compete with @Nollie flower show
but non-rose flowers are doing well already. And I spotted the first
bud on terrible foliage.
Yesterday I liqui-fed most of my potted
and earthed roses. After dragging 850 ltrs of fertilized water to the
precious ones I ran out of fertilizer and energy. I am just a little
afraid of what will cling to my shopping basket when I go to the GC
later on the pretext of buying fertilizer.
@JessicaS I just love your garden, not
only the roses.
