We've been at my home in France, sent photos earlier. Now we are at OH's cottage in Norfolk. Here are some of the roses. They aren't all out yet. My camera is a bit old and the roses have suffered a bit from lack of water. They have all had buckets full now so I hope they are happier.
Olivia Rose Austin, quite a young plant.
Park Parkdirektor Riggers climber, is a much brighter vermillion in real life.
For Your Eyes Only
Penelope, grown as a short climber
This has a label saying Baroness de Rothschild, but I have only recently looked it up and it should be paler pink. There is a Baronne Edmond de Rothschild which is this bright pink. A present from a friend.
Iceberg, climber.
New Dawn
Albertine
Madame Caroline Testout
We are going to Peter Beales this afternoon, not far from here and the roses should be looking lovely.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
A whole can a day? What size can I wonder? That seems extreme, mine get 2 or 3 x 12L cans a week in the very height of summer, normally 30-40c. I couldn’t physically do more than that and when it’s super hot, better to leave the roses to have a rest as they want to do in August anyway.
The hit list..
I am quite sad to say Mme. Isaac Pereire is facing the chop, since I’ve nursed it along for a few years but it’s dreadful in both sun and heavy rain. Others going should have gone last year but were given a reprieve due to replacement rose mix-ups or dead arrivals, e.g. La Rose de Molinard (balls and spoils horribly in rain, but oh that powerful fragrance) Super Trouper (revolting brownish coral in sun). Cramoisi Superieur is surprisingly under notice - BS was appalling this year and the whole defoliated, nothing from it since spring. Maybe I’ll finally throw in the towel with Darcy Bussell.
Far too early to tell with the newbies but ‘Not Crépuscule’ probably going, ‘Not Vichy Possibly Thierry Marx’ balls badly. Maybe Indigo - small, stunted blooms sit low amongst the foliage, not sufficiently wow in appearance or fragrance.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Fantastic selection of roses today, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it..
I too think that Jason-3's roses have some toxicity, that's not rose mosaic.. that pinking on the leaves suggests an adverse reaction .. if this is so, the only remedy is to flood the rose, using the hose, in the hope it will flush it through. It might work..
I also had that email from Austin's.. I would only do that for a recently planted potted rose, which can dry out quickly in this weather.. I have a couple that I'm having to water almost every day..
'Forever Royal'.. 'Scented Garden'.. 'Sophie's Perpetual'.. proving very vigorous, canes flying out everywhere.. blooms unfazed by heat so far.. ..this will be the first bloom on 'Bienvenue'.. I'm finding this shapely, pointed bud very attractive I must say.. Freesia 'Delta River'..
Hope you enjoyed your trip to Peter Beales, @Busy-Lizzie.
This is a post sadly lacking in David Austin roses (@Rojas, yours are eye-popping)...
Marchenzauber / Bliss Parfuma from Peter Beales. Was just £10 in a November sale and I am still pleased about that.😁
Bordure Camaieu from Beales, too
Silver Shadow from Styles
My Perennial Blue standard is coming out. Year two. Hoping for, though not expecting, some rebloom perhaps. Though still spikily upright, it is just beginning to gently weep. Lots of buds to open yet! I was wondering if a short clematis might cover the stake and stem a little without harm. Last year I made the silly mistake of planting cosmos in front... it got into the standard rose's fertiliser and did its best imitation of a California Redwood.

It is extreme. I watered roses in the ground twice this year (with some exceptions for specific roses). And when I water, I give them between 2 and 5 litres, not a whole can. I don't have too extreme temperatures though. And we had a storm on Monday, so they'll get nothing for at least two weeks.
We went to Peter Beales but I didn't buy roses. I bought 2 fuchsias, Polar and Alice Hoffman, needed something for a bit of shade. Also bought some compost.
The gardens were looking lovely, apart from a big thistle. I think some of the roses might have suffered a bit though from last year's heatwaves and the lack of rain recently here. They are having a Rose Festival this weekend so we will be going again.
