I have seen munstead wood and Jude the obscure mentioned on here several times because of the situation with them. I have one of each that I would be willing to give away for free to someone if their was any interest! I live in north east England next to Scottish Border if anyone was nearby and looking for either!! As I will be on the move later in year I thought I’d offer to a good home
I am someone that would be interested in Jude, and happy to put money to charity for the effort you make as well as paying for a courier. That's if there is no-one nearer that can just collect, of course.
@crighton03 Fruity Parfuma flowers well once matured.. my 3rd year FP had an extended 1st flush and now taking a break.. as I cut it down quite short for the move..
@WAMS that shot of that Maxima Romantica looks lovely...
@Alfie_ what are you feeding that Champagne moment..??
that is a good thought @Daniel Rutherford and you could be relieved that your roses will be taken care of in its new home..
@cooldoc it is very established so I only apply a slow release fertiliser twice; spring and midsummer. This year I did give it a one off 15L tomorite soak. It did well last year so can’t be sure if that did anything significant.
Went to Harkness today and told them about the Hamilton Princess emails I posted on here earlier. Needless to say they were very unhappy. Phillip Harkness said something like “Why on Earth would we rename a rose” and asked me to forward them the emails. Ironically they were in the middle of sending a scathing email to the head of the company they use to handle their online orders. I did echo the concerns I have heard regarding online orders from them. So sounds like they are taking action.
@cooldoc - absolute deluges followed by sun here - so really sticky and humid. Quite uncomfortable to be out in the garden (trying to dig out a rhododendron) so I gave up.
Glad to see that Lady of Shalott is holding up brilliantly, though poor Prices Anne took a battering. But I noticed that The Lark Ascending seems to be building up to another flush.
Good luck to all the movers and shakers, will be joining the relocation party myself in the next year or two, it’s just getting too damn hot here in summer.
Excellent looking cuttings @Alfie_ Did you sort out your climbers in the end, you were looking at Lady of the Lake I recall?
Most blooms on Mme. Isaac Pereire are frying but some decent ones are hiding in the shade at the bottom of the trellis:
William Shakespeare 2000, recovering is shade after an ant invasion:
Fur coat and no knickers (naked at the bottom) Souvenir de Marcel Proust:
Lady Hillingdon, rather scrappy looking this year:
Roald Dahl, small but sweet blooms:
Between flushes at the moment, but against all odds and common sense, Mme. Alfred Carriere has quadrupled it’s size in a matter of months and is thriving in a pot. Wonder how long I can keep her going like this, shall I take bets?!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Nollie thank you. Yes the cuttings are doing very well. First flush on the best Champagne M has about 20 buds from a cutting only taken in October. Still deciding on the small rambler/climber for the rose arch. Another small flowering one I came across that seems to get great reviews is Open Arms. Anyone have this?
Couple of questions if someone could kindly answer.
Firstly , I am new to rose standards and is it normal for both to already be throwing out 3-4 shoots near the bottom of the stem? Online it says the stem buds are silenced?
Secondly, my sister had a rose that wasn’t doing well so I told her to cut it to 2ft in spring as it was established based on the thick gnarly main stem. She said it is over 12 foot!! It doesn’t have any flowers at the top, only a few at the bottom. It was there when they moved in. It’s planted as a shrub so it’s now near a fence or anything. Never seen growth on that scale that fast.
In the spring:
Any ideas on what it is and how to deal with the fact it isn’t flowering at the top? Thanks
Hi @Alfie_ I belatedly remembered, I hope correctly, that @peteS has Lady of the Lake and it was doing really well for him. Hopefully someone grows Open Arms too..
Re standards producing suckers, did you plant with the graft above ground? If not you will get suckers growing from the graft union. I made that rookie error with my GdF standard and had to clear the soil from around the graft. It makes mulching tricky. The interstem (trunk) can also produce growth higher up that needs torn (not cut) off. They are supposed to have had the bud eyes removed, which I think is what they mean by ‘silenced’ but I haven’t found that in my GdF from France or Lens from Belgium. So it’s certainly not unusual and vigilance is key!
PS - wow, your sister’s rose! It’s possible it flowers on old wood and enough of that was left just at the bottom. Is it a once-bloomer? Otherwise it’s just put all it’s energies into recovering and growing phenomenally and it should hopefully flower as normal next year.

@PeterAberdeen@crighton03 so yeah they can be split between u both. They are still both quite young but am sure will do well. Jude is currently in a pot whereas munstead is in the ground so I will need to pot it up.
I properly love Penelope Lively now it's blooming. Love love love love love love. Scent, form, colour. Lavender Lassie The Alnwick Rose... second flush
@Nollie thank you for such a detailed and informative response. Maybe I have planted the crown too deep?
Taking this picture I can see more shoots! The ones I was talking about were about half way up the main stem. I have ripped these off as you suggested.
Finally purchased the three stakes today to anchor properly in the pot like you suggested as currently bamboo canes which are not that supportive in these strong winds today.
I asked my sister and you're right; it flowers only once so must flower on the previous year's growth. Thanks.
@WAMS that Penelope L looks fantastic. I espeically like the top left picture.
@Marlorena the Lovely Parfuma you recommended has now bloomed and is a Pretty Parfuma. Bit frsustrating as I ordered two and planted them together and they are both Pretty P. Cottage Memories refunded me which is good. I have now ordered a potted L Parfuma from Henry Street.
