Please help. I have blackspot and cannot seem to get rid of it. I've tried a organic spray. New growth on the roses is coming with blackspot. My D.A. rose DANNAHUE is fine.
It’s the weather causing it I reckon I striped mine all down and most of them came back without black spot but a couple have it on the new growth .I’m blaming the weather anyway ,there isn’t really a cure especially this late in the year .
@zakzak don’t panic. Blackspot won’t affect the blooms which is why it’s pointless using harsh chemical sprays. If you don’t like the look you can pick all the leaves off. My summer sweetheart had it on every leaf so I defoliated it completely and they grew back with nice fresh green leaves. Some roses get them as genetically they just are not very resistant to it. Dannahue is in Austin’s ‘Best for Health’ range so it won’t get much (if any) blackspot.
For example, my Scent from Heaven health is unreal. Rivals some of my healthiest Kordes roses. You won’t find a single leaf with any blemishes:
This is in a pot. I have blue moon in an identical pot with exactly the same compost, fertiliser etc and it has only a handful of healthy at best. It’s a black spot machine:
But I just pluck them off and it doesn’t stop it churning out the most stunning blooms:
All my loving, two blooms now fully open after purchasing earlier this week. It has a lovely cerise colour and shape. The standard chandos bought at same time has buds ready to open but making me wait, will post pics hopefully soon. Double delight In the pot.
I went ahead and bought an electric blower and vac, it works brilliantly. It does in 10 mins what used to take an hour to sweep the patio with moving everything to get access. Also very good on the decking surface clearing the gaps. It is noisy so headphones are sensible but not as bad as petrol ones. Thank you for spurring me on. 37 yr wedding anniversary gifts are rather different to earlier ones (yesterday)
I'm finding the blackspot not too prevalent but the rose rust is bad, even Strawberry Hill has it and that one is usually pristine.
I'm doing a PeterAberdeen style update, without the good photography. My new border Some rose detail
@Alfie_ yes it is continuous.. always colourful when it's hot and dry..
'Mrs John Laing' has a lovely sweet scent, but it's not continuous.. two flushes with a gap. It also has the advantage of being virtually thornless, and quite good disease resistance, considering the type.. It takes very high rank amongst 19thC roses.. but 'Gertrude Jekyll' would supersede for modern tastes..
