The postman brought treasure today- six nice little salvia plugs from newlandsnursery* on ebay (not sure if I would have spotted the little black teabags encasing the roots of them but for Nollie's thread- scissors at the ready!) and the glossiest, best-smelling catalogue.
Enjoy your holiday in The Lakes @Mr. Vine Eye you've really got lucky with the weather, not often a clear blue sky up there... I'll hazard a guess that's Rydal Water ...?
We used to go every year for many years, as we got caught up in the Timeshare phenomenon during the 1980's, so we bought one... fortunately we were able to sell it quickly when we realised there were better options..
I think Grasmere was my favourite but the big hills were too much for us even then, and didn't manage to climb any of them.. our Timeshare week was January, we never had the right gear, often deep snow, and I have no head for heights.. lots of low level walks though. April/May was our favourite time to visit.. on rare summer trips I even saw roses..
@ciaranmcgrenera - stunning porch. Do you water or feed any of those bulbs in pots before or during flowering?
Can anyone recommend a rambling rose. One that grows fast and works in partial shade is ideal. I have a timber outbuilding which looks bad on one side so would like to grow one on that. The side measures 6.5m high by 6m wide. Thanks
Your LEH looks about the same as mine @WAMS, just losing it’s initial burgundy red foliage.
Thanks for the further clematis inputs @ElbFee and @Mr. Vine Eye - and it looks absolutely glorious in the Lakes so enjoy it and forget the roses!
I’ve just installed Mme. Isaac Pereire in the new bed and it actually takes up more bandwidth than I imagined, given the bed is 10ft long x 7ft high x 4ft wide. I started growing it in a pot so it’s a bit more advanced than most newly planted climbers. If it ends up growing to fill the whole trellis I think a vigorous clematis companion is probably not feasible.
Here is the bed from the other side, with doggy photobombing. Not a straight line or bit of level ground anywhere here..
OH has suggested a rose arch to connect the two beds together would ‘finish it off nicely’ so I’ve ordered one to see how it will look.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Alfie_ yes, I find if I don’t give Tulips in pots a good water in the few weeks before flowering they end up short and the blooms don’t always come good.
The Daffs aren’t affected by that. When they’re flowering they all get a good soak if it’s not been raining. The window boxes especially don’t necessarily get rain as they’re a bit more sheltered.
The porch bakes a bit in the sun too so no matter what is in there it usually appreciates a drink.
At least at plug stage you can see the teabags easily and get the scissors out WAMS, when they are buried in potted plants you have to do a fair bit of rootling and root disturbance to seek and destroy. Ive just received my perennial order too, there is definitely a teabag presence lurking in the 9cm pots 👀

It’s the Southern end of Bassenthwaite Lake and Skiddaw mountain on the right
@n@newbie77 - last time we came around this time of year there were lots of rhododendrons and azaleas in flower in the gardens we visited (Mirehouse) bit early for them this year. There were some huge camellias though. Not a great photo, couldn’t get in the right position with the sunlight. At least 12ft tall
Hi, I’m a long time lurker in awe of all your beautiful roses and knowledge. I have a teeny tiny garden and I’m a rose novice, but have somehow managed to squeeze in eight roses after initially thinking I only had room for one!!
I now find myself with a dolly style pot that needs an occupant, so trying to decide on rose number nine! It’s position is open but it’s not super sunny, I have a Roald Dahl in a pot nearby and it’s happy. There is a Eustacia Vye in the bed next to it and once it gets going a Generous Gardener on the fence behind. Most of the colours in my garden are soft pinks, peachy/orange, purples and whites. As it’s so small I like it all to work together.
Roses I’m considering - Olivia Rose Austin (maybe too pale as I have three other pale pinks?) Princess Alexandra of Kent (perhaps too strong a pink) Boscobel (but think this may need full sun) Jubilee Celebration (looks like it may be discontinued)
Here is a mock of up of where it will be (the rose images are my own).
I’m in the south of the UK - north London/Herts borders if that helps.
I also have the Albrighton rambler, Emily Brontë, Bridge of Sighs Harglowing, Wollerton Old Hall and Desdemona. Mostly DA although I’m open to others, I do have discount voucher though for DA which makes it very tempting!
For real, @Nollie. The only pelargonium that I overwintered indoors not to make it apparently had one strangling its roots all that time... poor little thing! It was in and out of the garden soil last year without my noticing the thing.
Hello... Bill? And a faraway Smudge! Good helpers. Jess has been helping me check the fixings for the Albrighton Rambler's wire that my husband put in for me last year. Rust-resistant wire, my foot.
Outstanding camellia there, @Mr. Vine Eye, as are newbie's! Breath taking. Mine are still so small in their pots that I am rejoicing over every bloom lol

I am waiting for the early yellow ones to show. Banksiae or Canary Bird.
I remember one Easter Sunday seeing them flowering. But it was Italy and I don't know what time Easter was that year. Giardino Hanbury.
