Stay safe @Nollie, sounds horrendous, I wondered if you'd be affected when I read the news. It's all really frightening.
On a lighter note, my dear brother, who's visiting, has just given me a DA rose 'Desdemona' for my birthday next week which is very sweet of him. Only problem is space and the colour as I had been getting inspired thanks to all you lot to try a dark purple or red rose next. I've got lots of white/cream/blush/pink roses already so I'm a bit undecided but he doesn't mind if I change it. Any suggestions welcome.
Other good news is that I've got a gardener! Got a new health problem which has affected mobility and stamina so need some extra help, even if only for a couple of months. Seems very nice and capable, likes the garden, knows her stuff and is willing to do a couple of hours a week.
Thank you @Athelas and @WAMS. Yes, I just scatter seed wherever I think it would complement the roses. However, my scattering rarely blooms. Mostly the birds do the wildscaping here. Which leads to bushy, tall cornflowers front of stage. poppy forests etc. Oh well... :-) Here is another combo with cornflowers and Eryngium.
In general I try to plant combinations to enhance colours, bridge non blooming periods. Maybe you can do that with your Desdemona, Lizzi? White rose with blue, white rose with red etc. Get well soon, please. Wollerton Old Hall and friends.
Alister buff grey, Nollie. Three for the price (and space) of one. My Chandos channels Buff Beauty at the moment. Although we only have 22 degrees right now. Plus scattered showers. Therefore a very sunny pictures to lift the mood.
Thanks for reminding me of the cold, WAMS. That is why I will keep Mutabilis in the pot at least during this winter. It is easier to protect it that way.
Im so behind, but a lot of my roses have finished the big first flush and are resting. The last few weeks have been torrential rain constantly. Ill read and catch up! D.A gardens visit rescheduled for early August as hubby and I both down with colds. Ah well, heres my garden to tide me over...
Perfume kisses; (lovely scent too) Pomponella (oops if I already shared!) Abracadabra - the whites really yellow C.p.m with her clematis Lady Emma Hamilton. Left bed, most of the yellows and purples resting. Sheilas perfume in its pot hasnt stopped.
@Alfie_ just saw your open arms comment, yes ive got that... its in a dryish shady spot and happily flowers away. Its down the side of my shed with all my pots etc so dont photograph much but its a nice rose, very pretty and now its settled climbing and blooming away. Its currently all blooms at the top (fur coat no knickers as Nollie says!) But I think thats the location and being left to run riot, its not deadheaded and pruned as much. No real thorns. Easy and troublefree!
Hi @salo.daria, you are right, Paul can get really big. It probably won't break the birch's stem but the branches will not be able to support the rose. Like any rose you can cut it back. But why grow a rambler when you try to keep it small? I have never tried to train Paul as a ground cover rose. However, if there is nothing for it to climb in, what else could it do? Just keep in mind that you plant it at the shadier end of the slope because it will grow towards the light. MHO, I would try to swap the rose with someone who has the right tree and get a rose that works for you. 15x20m of garden and only one rose seems like a waste to me.
Thank you, @ElbFee, I kind of came to the same conclusion in the end. There is a guy nearby with a largish piece of land that he turned into something like a community park. I am hoping he might be able to take it. Thanks!
Thanks @Lizzie27, fortunately it’s abating a little. It’s still very hot but I think we were comparatively lucky to just catch the tail end of the heat plume. Just north of us it got to over 45c!
@ElbFee I lost my first Mutabilis to winter cold and it’s replacement was so miserable I got rid of that too. Winter temperatures here regularly plunge to -7 or 8c and the frost comes rolling down the mountains to settle on us in our little valley microclimate. Hopefully you will be luckier than me.
