@Elbfee You asked about scent. Soul has the strongest, I have it near the back door and it hits you going out. The Prince needs to be actively sniffed. Proper Job does waft but I cannot easily recommend the rose because of how the blooms fry and the lanky habit. Now it has rained the billion petals shattering have created an almighty mess. But my goodness when you get an undamaged bloom the petal arrangement, velvet texture, deep colour and scent combined do impress. But it's going...it really really is.
So looking forward to seeing your rose pics @Daniel Rutherford, agree that the promise they show is incredible
I think it might already be affecting south eastern parts here.. still, it's not yet anything like last July.. I'm more concerned about drought, it's becoming very difficult.. we used to get wet June's but I don't know what's happened to those..
Your 'Scarborough Fair' is just lovely Tack.. and very bold to put 3 Frilly Cuffs together.. looking forward to seeing how you manage that..
@Jason-3 I have 'Elizabeth'.. it's healthy, growing well, very vigorous.. I have it on an obelisk and is growing up that quite well, also some spreading growth.. quite attractive shape..
Scent is medium to me, I'm not yet overly excited by that aspect.. and the blooms shatter after 3-4 days.. however, like all Austin's they get better with age, and I think in time, the blooms will be larger, more dramatic and I'm not seeing the best of it yet, by any means... so too early to be conclusive but it's very floriferous.. masses of buds waiting to open..
Thank you I might give her a go. I've been disappointed in some the Austin's over the past few years.
I had a little laugh on smelling of seaweed and aphids in hair comment. It reminded me of an incident last year, when I was working in the garden and a delivery came. I opened front door and delivery guy gave me a shocked look. I am such a state at home but anyway after he went I looked in mirror and there were two tiny sawfly caterpillars on my hairs. I hope he didnt think those hatched at my head
Reading all the posts with great interest. For the past week we have been overcast with a threat of rain - but did it come? Come it did not.
After couple of days away in Edinburgh, though, I raced back and was met by these two. Nothing to compare to all your wonderful roses, but we are behind by weeks (about 4 weeks I think) up here and everything has been planted since Nov 22.
We give you my first ever Gertrude Jekyll. Not yet fully opened but smothered in awaiting buds. So glad we chose to plant it next too the back door.
and the Lark Ascending. Slight perfume, but it had just fully unfurled.
A small step to some, but a huge leap for all us up in Aberdeenshire. Can you remember the excitement and joy as the first rose you planted bloomed. Well that is me today: a dog with two tails!
Visited a couple of garden centres today. I only went to look at and smell some rose blooms. I didn't intend to buy anything but thanks to the heatwave the bargain sections were overflowing. Some of the roses looked very sorry, but there were plenty with just a crisped bloom or little wrong with them.
I bought Belle de Jour reduced from £14 to £4. I partly blame @Marlorena for convincing me I have room for a few more roses (but myself mainly for not being able to resist a bargain).
Don't grow up - grow sideways.
Gardening in the West Midlands on a mix of neutral loamy sand & Victorian building rubble.
I'm excited for your Peter ... and that's a lovely bloom on 'The Lark Ascending'.. fascinating centre to it, I don't think I noticed that before.. the bloom is much lighter than you would normally see, it's usually more amber colouring..
..some more blooms..
'Wild Rover'.. 'Sophie's Perpetual'.. 'Tall Story'.. 'Wild Blue Yonder'.. 'Champagne Moment'.. Phygelius 'Colourburst Orange'.. 'Mutabilis' will soon need deadheading, which involves shearing and a little pruning.. I try to time it when more flowers are gone over, than are out, but inevitably some fresh blooms get removed in the process.. quickly rebounds..
@Newbie77 😁😁😁 I think a lot of us let ourselves go a bit with age... wear old clothes, bother less with makeup, have caterpillars crawling around our head...
I often find an ant or aphid has attached itself,.. I think they sort of tell me to put them outside because they usually end up on my hand, just to let me know they're there..
@LateralBreaks Hmmm.. that's what we all say.. tell me about it, but you got a great deal there with that rose.. I've heard mostly good things about it..
