I’ve received Penelope Lively as a present from a friend. It has been delivered by DPD and one of the flowering branches was broken, but still in good shape. It has a strong rose smell and I like the form of the flower as well.
Grrr, another dealer @WAMS- do you know if Rogers ships to the continent? Couldn't find the info on their website. Liked their info why they can't do next day delivery. Not that I didn't know all that, but it is a nice touch how they explained their ways. On the honesty bit @Nollie suggested earlier.
Did anyone make a list of the recently discontinued DA's? Just so we snatch them all :-)
Munstead Wood Lady Emma Hamilton Winchester Cathedral Shropshire Lad Tess of the d'Urbervilles Sir Walter Scott Jude the Obscure Darcey Bussell Charles Darwin Charlotte Brother Cadfael The Alnwick Rose Teasing Georgia Benjamin Britten* (forgot this one) Crown Princess Margareta The Countryman
All shelved without warning last autumn. I think they ditched Graham Thomas the year before... is that right?
They also withdrew the standard versions of some roses including Jubilee Celebration, Wildeve, Wisley 2008 and Grace, though the shrub versions remain available for now.
I don't know whether RV Rogers would ship as I think it would involve faff and expense- but why not email them? They're very kind. Their address is [email protected] .
Interesting to see Penelope Lively, seems to be really hit and miss.
@Alfie_ your Scepter’d Isle and Champagne Moment are making me want to find more room in the garden!! They are both really beautiful and right up my street. Do you find CM grows as a shrub or climber? Do you think either would be happy in a pot?
Thanks for the list @WAMS, I would love a Shropshire lad, it was so beautiful when I saw it at the DA gardens.
All my roses are resting now, only Roald Dahl, Wollerton and Bridge of Sighs that have the odd bloom. What are your best bloomers?
That is a very interesting article @Nollie , but I'm still not sure I could work out which type of fragrance I have. 🤔😁
@Nollie that’s really interesting. Fruity and Old Rose for me. I’m not as keen on myrrh but I do like it and it’s incredibly unique for me to get Christmas smells from a rose.
@JessicaS - I got Queen of S earlier in the summer and it’s beautiful.
@agnasia thank you. Yes I love my Champagne M. Mine is particularly vigorous and despite cutting it down to 2-3ft in the winter it is over 6ft now. Having spoken to Marloerna that is unusual and not the norm so I wouldn't go by the growth habit of mine. Since it is usually smaller it does do well in a pot. I have 3 successful cuttings from last Autumn and will be putting one in a pot and giving away the others. With my one you could definitely use it as a climber. The main central stems are pushing 7.5ft currently! If you are in no hurry I will keep you posted with some pictures of how my own roof does in a pot. It is so incredibly floriferous and the health is just unreal. A 6ft bush and I would challenge anyone to find one diseased leaf. So yes I would highly recommend it.
It took on a much more pleasing form last year when it was kept shorter so I'm pruning it back much harder this year as it has gotten too tall this year. Although the stems are very sturdy when you get 15+ medium-large blooms opening all at once it will always fall forward. Here are a few shots from last year:
My first fully opened Scepter'd Isle bloom:
Hoverflies go nuts. They just seem to bathe in it all day.
@Alfie_ thank you so much for the insight and photos, it’s such a beautiful rose. I’m in no hurry, so would love to see how your cutting does. Great to hear it’s so healthy. Definitely on my list to buy!
We went to the Hampton Court Garden Festival on Wednesday. There was a separate marquee for roses. Peter Beales won a gold medal. I thought his stand was better than David Austin. Here are my rose photos, but some have funny lighting because of the lighting in the tent. I have posted my other photos here https://forum.gardenersworld.com/discussion/1075372/hampton-court-garden-festival-photos#latest
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
@Busy-Lizzie fantastic looking displays there! Some really stunning roses.
For anyone eying champagne moment cottage memories had really gorgeous ones i saw last weekend, might have some left. I dont have much that colour or id have had one myself!
@WAMS Jess is gorgeous! Love those purples too, is that Kathryn top right, moody blue bottom right? Heres the boys eating my violas out of the pots as usual! The 2 girls dont!
another Rose thread lurker here. Penelope Lively arrived yesterday via DPD. Box was in good condition and so were its contents. Lots of buds. Will post again once flowering commences. Now planted out in a main border. Think there is a little bit of “spray damage”
