just read an old Agatha Christie where the killer was exposed by her lie that the mark on her wrist came from the thorns of rosa Zéphirine Drouhin... which Poirot knew to be thornless!

But Christie calls ZD a red rose. But ZD is distinctly pink. Not remotely red. I always wondered why she made the error.

Your roses are doing well.. two of my favourites, past and present..

Yes that's 'New Dawn' rose, the blooms, foliage and the abundant thorns all point to it.. but if it never repeats bloom then it's either one of two reasons... your far north location may prevent further blooming, or you have the identical once flowering 'Dr. Van Fleet'.. 'New Dawn' is a genetic mutation of that rose..
Just one piece of feedback on the unknown rose.  We have another, that was a cutting from this one.  It grew very tall and pulled the trellis from the wall.  I had to cut it right to the ground (as it fell on me and my Hollyhocks and I saw red and hacked it down), needless to say it has grown back with strongish long canes, but no flowers this year at all.  This would tend to suggest a rambler, or am I making a rookie error and New Dawn/Dr Van Fleet are both climbers or a mutant rambler/climber?

Hello, has anyone kept 'Roald Dahl' in a container please? Would love to see pictures if you have :)
@ohdeereme, I have it in a pot — it’s nice and shapely, with lots of healthy foliage and rain-resistant flowers that also have a high tolerance for direct sunlight without browning. No scent for me but I would definitely recommend it for a pot.

The colours vary with flower age and the light/time of day. I’ll try to take a whole pot photo tomorrow or so.

That's so pretty! Thank you for sharing 😊

Yes! Funny, both that and the last Christie I read had New Zealand-born or -based characters in them. We're a sinister lot. Your roses are beautiful. Isn't LoS the loveliest hue?

@Athelas terrific If I didn't have Lady of Shalott, I'd get that after seeing those pics.

Lady of Shalott is a beautiful colour and from the pictures down-thread of more mature specimens I look forward to her in later years.

Poet's Wife is a lovely yellow too, seems to fade paler over the days which I really like.

Considering two small obelisks for them to grow through and give them some better support.

Looks nice @Tack at least yours is ready to open, mine is a little way off yet..

    @PeterAberdeen
I feel pretty sure you've got the rose called 'Dr. Van Fleet'.. it's usually listed as a climbing rose because it has blooms more like a climber than a rambler and stiffer stems, however it grows much like a rambler.. it was introduced circa 1900 in the U.S. bred by the Doctor.. it was originally called 'Daybreak' but they changed the name..
...   back in the day Peter Beales used to list it as a rambler.. and it's often referred to either way..  some of these types have dual characteristics really..

It flowers on old wood, so if you cut it down then it will flower next summer, if you don't cut it back again..

'New Dawn' is a repeat flowering mutation of it.. which you don't seem to have..
I hope this clears it up for you Peter..

Rust aside, looks good, @Tack! Can't wait to see your pics of the blooms and hear the scent report.
