Hi all! I would like to draw on your wisdom again if I may. Stems on my Gabriel Oak look a bit unusual I think. On side is a normal dark green but the other is rather dark, almost black with a tinge of red at the very bottom of two stems. Is this normal?

And that broken bark - does it mean I'll need to cut that stem down in winter?

@Mr. Vine Eye I saw on last year's thread that you grow beautiful Royal Jubilee. How bad is it in terms of balling? I am in West Yorkshire and it rains a lot. I really like that rose but not sure there is any point in even trying...

@salo.daria that looks normal to me.. they do have discolouration where they touch the ground..

@cooldoc Jean Robie has a pleasant fruity fragrance, not overpowering, but a good one. The flowers seem unaffected by the intermittent rain and sunshine. The petals lose their yellow colour and turn cream as they age. I don't have JC, so can't compare with that. I'm planning to get JC this bare root season.

    Those are both gorgeous @Tack

Is The Prince a difficult one? I wondered if it would be a good alternative to MW, although I don't think the fragrance would be as good and I already have Falstaff anyway. I so desperately need to find MW.

Thinking about possibly a Gabriel Oak as well. I've made a space!

@salo.daria RJ does ball, not awfully. I’ve got a few brown blobby balled blooms at the moment but this summer has been non-stop rain. I can’t say I’ve ever noticed it before.

It’s nowhere near as bad as Bathsheba, she’s a mess!
