Went to the seaside last week with the family. We had lovely weather. 10 degrees but blue open skies. looking forward to that Prince Nollie;). Came back , and roses have made a step forward. First buds spotted and the clematis is in full bloom now.
Thanks @Marlorena. That's very reassuring. I've just been out and fed it, I only have miracle grow, but will buy something specifically for roses. Will also mulch and remove manky leaves tomorrow. Thanks again.
Some lovely roses coming along. Very jealous of people with buds. No buds for me. Pleased with Eustacia V, looks the best of this winter's bare roots:
As others have mentioned, I'm also liking the purple growth on the Kordes':
Fingers crossed for your rose @Nollie. I had to move three of mine last season and they sulked big time but all three have bounced back. The worst was Gerty who was popping off when we had a fence installed and a post went straight through one of her main roots. All flowers died/drooped within 24 hours:
She looks like she has recovered from that now with some nice new growth.
First look today at hardwood cuttings I took at the end of last season and most have rooted!
@HarryWhite If you are looking for a bush that can take both hot and cold, flowers profusely, scented, and low on thorns then Blue for You is a contentender. @Marlorena The way to get a rose as a present, is to get given DA's catalogue, told to pick what you would like, then they get it sent to you. Simples! 😁
@JessicaS I feel your pain, although they are so adorable it must make it a little easier?! Although four of them must keep you busy!
@ElbFee agree with not wanting to be given a rose as a present, my garden is tiny anyway so it thankfully hasn't happened yet. Those thorns on Othello are too much for me let alone the unknowns!
@HarryWhite and @Nollie I have a Desdemona in my south facing front garden, I sadly neglected all my gardening last year and she did get crispy but still bloomed away. I actually kind of didn't mind the look though! She was my first to bloom, so I'm going to check her in the morning as I'm now scouting for buds seeing everyone elses!
A fried Desdemona
It's my birthday in May, so I've been thinking about planning a visit to David Austin's garden, probably in half term. I know it will still be slightly early (end May/beg June), but do you think there would be enough for me to see and enjoy? I could also look at some roses in person and potentially chose my rose for the pot?
It was you who made me get Blue for You, @purplerallim! Are you in the pay of Big Rose? Still hesitating about where to put it as it seems it would slot in anywhere. What do you have beside yours?
@Alfie_ well done with the cuttings. I seem to have had a few successes (Not lifted yet but based on the top growth vigour) but also a lot of rotten sticks. None of my Munstead Wood cuttings took. Not surprised, they were far too thin but that was the best I could get from the scrawny runt.
My Mary Delaney ones are doing well though.
Ive been gardening this afternoon, cutting things back and tidying up before doing some more mulching. Planted the new clematis too. Was pleased to see that my echinacea has all returned for another year - surprised every time as I know they’re meant to be short-lived. These ones were amongst the first seeds I sowed.
They've also self seeded this year! Found a small patch nearby.
@ElbFee I'll put the kettle on! @Busy-Lizzie I keep eying Astranomia! Look forward to pics. Ive only ever seen Checkmate on Dicksons site but I think its sometimes available elsewhere.
Busy days planting again here. Managed to get Babylon Eyes, Spectablis, Birthday Boy (replacment), Lavender Symphonies and x3 cutie pie roses all planted this weekend.
Pulled up what was supposed to be Orienta Aladdin, climbing hulthemia as it was short and sickly last year and looking awful... found its definatley dead and also when dug up its white tag has orienta magnolia on! No wonder it was short, its the wrong rose! Too late to order another bare root, but will mail Pococks and see if they will replace it next season. Put a few more spring bulb pots out. Hounds keep eating the pansies in them! Lots of roses popping up here, actually about 14 in this corner! I moved Ebb Tide closer to the path out of viburnum opulus shade and it seems happier already. From a few different angles.
The bed contains:
Rhapsody in Blue
Mountbatten
Sir John Mills (climber)
Mamma Mia
Eyes for you
Arthur Bell (climber)
For your eyes only
Port Sunlight
Iceberg (climber)
And the first bud was found on Rhapsody in Blue

Hope this helps. Maybe not, if you need to buy Huddersfield, too.
