    @salo.daria, I planted Strawberry Hill on an obelisk earlier this year and as it grew, gently tied the new pliable canes horizontally around it on the outside, leaving just one or two to grow up through the middle. This had been recommended by other posters.

    However, it might be my imagination but growth seems to have stalled which may be down to the very hot, dry weather we had earlier and the second flush is only just beginning now (it's cooler and wetter).

    I'm waiting to see what happens next.  Hope this helps.

    @Lizzie27 great - thank you! Will start tying it as soon as this torrential rain stops...

    Quick question... am just about to buy a Lady of Shallott (thanks, in part, to so many good reviews on this thread!)... should I go ahead and buy an end-of-season potted rose now, or should I save a few quid and wait till November for a bare root...?

    @Perki, such a wonderful pergola, I am quite envious.

    However, I would have reservations about adding a wisteria into the mix with roses as I think you might find the ongoing maintenance and pruning rather too much. It would also involve much climbing up stepladders as well as potentially shading out the roses when in bloom.

    Good luck with your project and plant choices, look forward to seeing more pics.

    ^so pretty, look a bit like Nye Bevan..

    @Janie B
    I prefer the potted version at this time of year, as it's a year older than the bare root you'll get in autumn..
