@salo.daria, I planted Strawberry Hill on an obelisk earlier this year and as it grew, gently tied the new pliable canes horizontally around it on the outside, leaving just one or two to grow up through the middle. This had been recommended by other posters.
However, it might be my imagination but growth seems to have stalled which may be down to the very hot, dry weather we had earlier and the second flush is only just beginning now (it's cooler and wetter).
I'm waiting to see what happens next. Hope this helps.
@Lizzie27 great - thank you! Will start tying it as soon as this torrential rain stops...
@Eustace ah yes I do remember seeing Pittar patter picture its a very nice rose I'll add it to the potential list . It does have quite a span to grow 8ft is possibly a bit small I want it to grow up a post and across a horizonal do you think it be big enough. I were going to ask @pitter-patter how his Clematis summer sweet love is doing ?
A picture may help what I am after and where I want the roses to grow. I haven't finish the pergola yet just missing a few braces but nearly there I've ran out of wood. Its just over 8ft tall - 8ft depth and 16ft wide . Rose on near right post to grow up post and across left and the other way back down a rafter towards the house to frame the walk way 2nd pic ( if you know what I mean ) . And the same again on the other side wisteria to go in the middle. Ghislaine is on the fence and Malvern hill on the shed just to the right out of picture hence why probably not a yellow
..glad you enjoyed your trip to DA @JessicaS .. all those lovely roses..
.. your roses are in great shape @Alfie_ .. Silas and 'GT' especially.. what a Standard that is..
@Perki .. I would omit 'Roundelay' from your list, I have heard poor reports of this rose.. Your pergola is looking rather fine I must say, good quality.. I always think one rambler should be included on such a structure and 'Alexandre Girault' has always been a favourite.. offers some repeat into autumn if not pruned back at midsummer [prune laterals in winter].. quite a good flush in Sept. if left alone.. ..old photo of when I had it on an arch, such a graceful, fragrant and cascading rose, perfect for that purpose.. I do hope you consider this wonderful old rambler with a colouring unmatched in this group..
..not the rose in the picture but perhaps you might like the pink 'Mary Delany', few thorns, beautiful foliage and scent, and suitable also for uprights then across.. but of course, you must choose your own..
Quick question... am just about to buy a Lady of Shallott (thanks, in part, to so many good reviews on this thread!)... should I go ahead and buy an end-of-season potted rose now, or should I save a few quid and wait till November for a bare root...?
Thank you for the DA report @JessicaS, I'm so glad you managed to get a good haul including Penelope L.
Fantastic pergola @Perki, something for us all to look forward to. I have Alexandre Girault but as it is still only 15ft up inside a dense tree there isn't much to photograph. It seems healthy and is a gorgeous colour with better than expected repeat.
I don't mention Faustinia much but today seems a good day to show it.
@Perki, such a wonderful pergola, I am quite envious.
However, I would have reservations about adding a wisteria into the mix with roses as I think you might find the ongoing maintenance and pruning rather too much. It would also involve much climbing up stepladders as well as potentially shading out the roses when in bloom.
Good luck with your project and plant choices, look forward to seeing more pics.
Yes, me too with the pergola envy, a splendid job @Perki. I wouldn’t envy you deadheading a repeat-flowering rambler over the top of it though 😆 I would be inclined to go for once-blooming, self-cleaning but spectacular rose over the top and more manageable repeaters grown up the outer supports, but you might be far more nimble up a ladder than me.

@Janie B
I prefer the potted version at this time of year, as it's a year older than the bare root you'll get in autumn..
Wow, fab Faustinia @Tack.
