@cooldoc was that "Fond farewell"? I ordered that too, it'll be a lovely surprise in October when Ive forgotten! First bud of the year for me, Rosa Des Cistertiens! Delighted to see my wisteria is covered in buds again too! We also have our first chicks hatched of the year, Robins. Must have just hatched today as we can now hear them and see the parents flying to and fro. Lovely.
While I still haven’t decided on a rose for my pot, I’m scouting for more gaps in the garden to squeeze more in!!
Wondering if I can pop something in the gap between the fence and the shed, although it would be next to the crabapple?
I have the Albrighton rambler on the other side of the shed, hoping for it to grow up and cover the roof eventually. We need to finish off the edging next to the shed, please ignore that for now!!
I feel so sorry for you @Watsonia. As
much as we like nature in our garden, not the rose munching kind,
please. If you cannot put up a high fence, 1 to 3 spaced wires above
your normal fence might do the trick without giving your garden a
prison atmosphere. Force the deer to jump at least 2,20m and forget
about all kinds of hair or expensive repellant products. My mother
has the same visitors and we tried about everything else. At least the
wild boar have disappeared. A complete garden make-over is required
when they come by to say hello.
@JessicaS what a great spring display
in your front yard. I am already looking forward to your fabulous
Wisteria. Mine will never get this nice, I fear.
@helen.bates.47wRj8BZr- If it is possible it is not
cramming, that's my definition. Too many fish in the rose pond that
must not be ignored.
More basal spotting. It proves my
assumption that most of my roses need 2-3 years to settle in before
they start getting wider. Very human behaviour. At least I get wider
with age, too.
Weather was really nice today until to 2
hours ago. BBQ season commenced. And soon it will look like this
again.
I have fortified the fence a bit more today. They obviously got decided they like the taste of my garden and this morning I found two more roses and all my ranunculus eaten. It is early in the season so I’m hoping that they will recover. I try to garden with nature but it can get very very frustrating. I have tried human hair as @bédé mentioned, it didn’t work for me,
They are quite used to humans and even my dog can get quite close to them without them running off. I will increase my research I to deer resistant plants and hope that the improved fencing will help.
Thanks @ElbFee im looking forward to it too, took 5 years to get it to flower! Its a beautiful purple and white called 'Tiverton'. Im relieved I must have pruned it correctly as its got even more buds than last year. Thats a gorgeous border you have there.
@helen.bates.47wRj8BZr- I shouldn't worry, theres always room for more and youll find yourself led astray with more here im on 80+ and counting....!
@JessicaS absolutely THRILLED you managed to nab Usha Ki Khan!❤ I wobbled over that one but went for Fond Farewell and Mrs Muriel Reynolds in the end (and BoscobelandTheShepherdessandSilverShadow as last ditch bareroots... if I say them fast they won't show up on my bank statement👍).
@helen.bates.47wRj8BZr- welcome to the thread. I think when I joined this thread I had... five to seven roses. Now... more than that.
@Watsonia I would be devastated. Hope you find a way to deter them.
yes, it is Fond Farewell @JessicaS My worry is that I will have to move again before start of next school year and how am I going to change the address.. will I even remember that I ordered..
I get excited when I see one new basal.. you got loads there @ElbFee
Sorry about the deer issues Watsonia.. I have seen some deer repellants on Amazon, not sure if they would work as advertised.. last year I had issues with the neighboring cats using my pots as toilets..
second cat this week.. using 'Nepeta Purrsian Blue' to get high
@agnasia - I've planted a rose quite close to a crabapple before and it really didn't like it. As they're in the rose family of plants you can end up with rose replant disease and failure to thrive because it's planted too close to existing roots.
Three years old and it still hasn't really forgiven me for it. Very small still.
I went to Lowther today. Hopefully one day we’ll see it in June. The roses were well behind mine at home. Maybe they only pruned recently. Farley bare sticks but there were lots of them! The ramblers have started climbing up those black rose stem arches now.
Thanks @Mr. Vine Eye I thought that might be the case. Oh well I’ll just stick to one for the pot, if I can get round to deciding!!
Lovely to see the roses, they do do look recently pruned as mine are leafing up a lot and I didn’t do them that long ago. I bet those arches will be glorious in the summer!
@cooldoc, I use upturned old metal hanging baskets pinned down over nepeta to deter cats from destroying the crowns. The foliage soon grows over the basket and hides it.
