I'm 2 weeks behind this time last year, but I have my first rose . Seems I'm a bit behind most people here. DA Bathseba or Lady Garner (I was never quite sure)
That's s lovely surprise at your new house @Wynken
Your friend's yellow climber is wonderful @Busy-Lizzie, I do like a nice strong yellow.
That's a nice spot for a rose @daisym, I'll let others offer suggestions but I think lots of roses would look good against the grey background and pot.
I hope it's ok to still have foliage only shots for those of us in the north/ late and harsh pruners and other excuses
Vintage Classic, unpleasant mis-shapen flowers last year but looking ok as it is at the mo
Princess Anne has taken Vintage Classic's space in a pot at the front of the drive. It's west facing and the closer to the house the fewer hours of sun. At the moment none Walferdange in the ground behind and a blurry young Buff Beauty on the railings between the tea tree and the holly. Yellow daff Stint is quite sweet, new this year.
Update on the Pheno Geno Experiment. Draga starting its second year with me, upgraded to a permanent pot for being a good sport last year. Something is chewing it, I suspect snail but to be fair there is nothing else vaguely edible in that corner (til my raspberries fruit )
Happy to note I have 5 of those Nollie, I will have to see whether my climate gives the same results, 3 are recent purchases
DaisyM do you have a colour or bloom type preference? Did you want it to reach a particular height? Like Nollie I find Marie Pavie is a fabulous rose for a pot but it has multiple small blooms continuously and stays short, full and wide. Chandous Beauty is another good one, much bigger and impressive blooms but flowers in flushes with lulls in between. The latter would outgrow your pot after a couple of seasons I think but maybe you could root prune. Ebb Tide and Desdemona worth a look too
Lovely day here, so nice. Canary Bird has been a delight since 3rd April, still some buds to open but maybe the last photo of the season as other things come in.
Munstead WoodOlivia Rose AustinOdysseyNot so great is I found this sucker on Eden Standard, it only surfaced because it reached the pot rim. Maybe now I've cut it the rose at the top of the stick will get a move on.
Your garden is looking very fresh and spring like @Tack
More front garden heroes, The mighty Lark Ascending with the reddish growth of Flanders in front. Flander's still has the shape of an angry crab, claws aloft, but it has put up a new shoot in the middle so may start to balance out. Julia Child in its new bigger pot for this year, the ratty looking grass in the pot are crocus leaves.
Purple tulip mix with Paul Crampel in a pot to the left. Paul has lost its space in the front garden, turns out it wasn't a space at all but I have found somewhere in the back for it. I cut Hot Chocolate back quite severely, it is shooting but still hasn't got above the rest of the foliage in the border, hence all the bare brick. Stephanie d'Ursel in the autumnal colours to the right and Highgrove leaning against the window at the back.
10/10 for La France fragrance, high praise indeed cooldoc! It’s such a personal thing and so dependent on conditions and climate, not to mention the notes your nose detect the best. Chandos Beauty sounds a must-have Agnasia, lots of praise for it. Tack, I hope your new ones deliver. I do like lists, the more the merrier!
Another opening for me today, Buff Beauty:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Counting the days for the first rose here in the garden. Also here still in the bud phase. Some colour is peaking through at Walferdange , Malvern Hills and Pink Cloud ( the last one with an awful foliage..
Silas Marner throwing out long canes but also becoming more wider.
My husband brought today some flowers so I have some roses and colour.
@Victoria Sponge those pots looks lovely and huge.. Trevor white has some new pheno geno this year.. but none of them from the new series..
@Tack@Nollie Marie Pavie is mentioned as moderate fragrance in HMF.. but members have voted it as excellent.. seems like a good white rose.. don't think we have many strongly scented Polyanthas.. Regarding La France.. yes fragrance could be subjective Nollie.. But I find people are divided over the Myrrh/ Aniseed fragrance more than anything else.. Tea is something that is rarely strong or prominent IMO.. wonder how strong is the Tea in your Buff beauty.. I was looking into DA climbers.. Interestingly, except Gertrude J, every other strongly scented ones are Myrrh scented..
@Victoria Sponge and @Tack Thanks for your posts. As for colour, I don't think a dark colour would suit but would be happy with pale pink, white, pale colour generally. It would be good to reach the top of the fence and a bit more. Not really wanting to repot after two or three years! But happy to get a suitable pot for the right rose. I have been checking through this thread but don't know enough to make a decision. I have never had a climber so thought that would be interesting, especially when there is much discussion on this thread. But also happy with a taller shrub rose. Thanks.
I must say Olivia Rose Austin looks fabulous @Tack I have looked at the suggestions and they are all lovely but Ebb Tide is too dark and Marie Pavie looks great but is perhaps too small. I think Desdemona with the fragrance is a real possibility. Maybe there are no short climbers which fit the bill. Thanks again.
