My Dr. Jamain is in shade and likes to be fed and watered. It's in a rather dry poor soil place though , well mulched. It has grown far more quickly than Park Inspektor Riggers which was planted at the same time but in a different area. The flowers are so beautifully scented. It does tend to black spot and a bit of mould once high summer arrives.

  • Re Morrisons - they do have some great perennials at great prices - so if something doesn't work, then not much lost money wise.

I picked up some this weekend - some nice Astilbes, Lupins and Agapanthus to augment what I already have.  Though the lupins are the common blue ones, I thought they might go well behind the yellow rose.

I did also go to Lidl, but there was nothing left of interest.  I didn't think I needed a mangy looking Magnolia or a Gooseberry bush!

Has anyone got experience of planting grasses with roses and what are your thoughts on rose colour combinations with Zebra Miscanthus?

I think I've been sold a 'pup' with this so called galvanised, rust resistant wire. I only put it up last summer. I'll have to take it down and do it again with better quality wire I think before the climber on it gets too much bigger. On the plus side, it does match the colour of the wall.
A belated thanks @Marlorena for my chicken pellet query. And I have noticed the unmistakeable pong of chicken manure in other products.

Gary, the handyman, is digging up the Malvern Hills rose. It shows no signs of life, gone brittle o I'm going to plant a box with new earth and compost and plant a new rose into it. Trip to Peter Beales tomorrow D If I decide to go for Malvern Hills again I will have to buy it elsewhere as it's by David Austin.

Has anyone tried "Excelsa"? Peter Beales has that, but Chevy Chase that I had thought about isn't in stock. Otherwise what is a good rambler or climber that will bend over an arch? Preferably repeat flowering, fragrant, not too thorny, doesn't mind some shade, not pale pink. I like pale pink but OH says we have enough in that area. I already have Ghislaine de Féligonde so not that.
