Sorry about your Louis XIV @ElbFee do you know how bad was your frost? my bare root has survived since November.. we had a week of snow/ frost.. with temps down to -2 or so.. wondering if it needs to be kept in pot always..
@Mr. Vine Eye did you prune your Desdemona short? mine looks leggy with hardly any new growth/ basals below.. probably will prune it hard after the first flush...
@pitter-patter that Peach Melba would be stunning once it starts going.. Kordes ones tend to be a bit slower than others to start blooming I feel..
@cooldoc Louis has lived in a pot for 3 years. He spent the winter sheltered but outside. The lowest we had was 2 nights at -10 C early December. Lots of new leaves in spring. Then I moved him to an unsheltered but bright location, gave him fresh soil and that was the beginning of the end. The temperatures did not drop below -3 after that. By now everything above ground is dead. But I will keep it potted. Just maybe some new growth will appear from the graft. Generally, im my climate, it will never move out of a pot.
@Marlorena and @cooldoc, I have some observations on the blooms of Mme. Isaac Pereire [Armand Garçon, France, 1876] and Mme. de Sévigné [Moreau-Robert, France, 1874).
MIP today, which has smaller blooms, droopier necks and by the end of the day, had already started to crisp a little around the edges - I recall that from last year, the blooms barely lasted a day in heat. So MdS is the stronger in all those respects. The fragrance of MIP has improved in this, it’s third year, and is now very similar to that of 2-yr old MdS which had that strong old rose fragrance from the very first bloom. MIP possibly has a slightly more orderly petal arrangement. Colour is almost identical. Is it the same rose? The stronger growth habit, larger blooms and greater heat tolerance of MdS indicate not, but it’s possible the breeding ancestry is virtually identical. Perhaps Moreau-Robert simply bred a stronger variety??
Mme. Isaac Pereire:
By 4pm you can see more drooping, petal curling and a little crisping top left:
Cooldoc, starting with the smallest bloom and least fragrant of the bourbons:
Boule de Neige (only going on one bloom in first year) Catherine Guillot Mme. Isaac Pereire Mme. de Sévigné
I would say Palais Biron equals MIP and MdS but is more complex and intriguing with additional fruity notes. Heat plays a part in bringing certain notes out and suppressing others, of course.
PB today:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Interesting observations Nollie.. I hope you continue to notice the differences between those two fabulous roses.. it's part of the fun growing these old types I think.
Recommendations please for a rose (Climber perhaps? ) to be grown in a pot of suitable size. location will be sheltered south west corner of garden against a wall with trelliswork already in place. Maximum height to be say 2.5 metres, but needs to be disease resistant, fragrant, yellow blooms.
@Thriftyboy For that situation and meeting your requirements, I would recommend 'Golden Showers'.. it's been a while since I had it, but it is one fabulous yellow, scented rose - often overlooked these days - that is so easy to grow, in that it can be pruned and managed for height and width purposes... it also has the advantage of being virtually thornless.. the blooms are held outward facing on strong stems..
Repeats quickly and is always in flower through the season..
I remind myself that 6th May is still very early for blooms on most roses, so we continue to enjoy the foliage... here are some healthy looking roses.. 'Tottering by Gently'.. 'Mutabilis'..
'Elizabeth'.. 'Wild Rover'.. 'Desdemona'.. 'The Anniversary Rose'.. 'Silas Marner' is obviously very easy to strike from cuttings.. I potted this one on today into a TW pot.. Lavender 'Anouk'..
@cooldoc - relatively short, about 45cm tall I think.
@Marlorena - well done, I’m disappointed with my cutting efforts this year. All the growth seems to have stopped. Not given up on them completely yet but definitely not having the same success level as I have in the past.
Tried to take some photos this afternoon while with little one on one arm. Not easy as he kept grabbing the camera and shaking it. Surprised I got any focussed shots at all! 😁
First flowers on my wisteria. It was set back a year when the neighbours dropped a pine branch on top of it. So lovely to see some. Not a big show this year but there’s a few racemes. Taste of things to come. 5-6 years old now I think.
Brunnera Sea Heart
Paler flowers on Jack Frost - thanks for recommending it Marlorena - love the foliage
Lone Dutch Iris, that somehow survived the cull a few years ago. Growing in damp shade - complete opposite of what they should like!
Excuse the aphids, but just showing the leafy sepals that Royal Jubilee loves to grow in Spring. I couldn’t reach in to clear the aphids off before the photo.
@cooldoc how old is your Desdemona? Mine was leggy early on but it’s so much better now, approaching year three.
@Nollie your GJ is beautiful, I would love to have this so will live vicariously through you!
@Marlorena your roses are looking so lush. What are your thoughts on Elizabeth? I came across a video online and she looks lovely, I particularly like the variation in colour and she seems to be a nice bushy form. Do you think she would like being in a pot? What are your thoughts on fragrance?
@Mr. Vine Eye I like your brunnera and Jack Frost, I enjoy seeing the planting amongst the roses.
My first to flower will definitely be Bridge of Sighs, it’s just a question of which bud out of two contenders!
I’m also surprised by my tulips, I left them in the ground instead of lifting the bulbs so wasn’t really expecting anything, but they’ve come back well.
