@agnasia - your Wollerton OH is coming on nicely. I know you will love that PAoK! How is your Bridge of Sighs doing?
@Gertrudejeykllrose - that GJ is beautiful. I wouldn’t be able to get any gardening done with all those blooms that must be smelling so nice.
@Nollie thank you. Your WS2000 is superb. Hopefully that’s what mine is.
I can’t find any information out there for how big standards get. Yes that photo from DA that looks like an actual tree is Golden C.
How do you know how big a standard will eventually get? Both in terms of top growth size and eventual trunk length and girth? If my GT would get as big as that Golden C does the trunk get thicker and longer too to support such enormous top growth? Thanks
Why not put these questions in an email to David Austin / Harkness, @Alfie_ ? I got such a helpful response from RV Roger this week to a question I had about some buds on one of their roses. (And I can't wait to see pics of your CB standard!)
You have lots of pretty older roses, @Discandied. Are there any you would especially recommend?
@Alfie_ I’m trying to keep on top of all the deadheading, it’s hard with Bridge of Sighs as the blooms are in clusters. It’s still a blackspotty mess but the bees are loving it. I’m now just picking up all the fallen leaves, I’ve given up taking them all off!
Albrighton looking so pretty but with its own blackspot issues.
@purplerallim I'd like to see more blooms to see how they vary, but I don't recall ever seeing 'Claire Austin' with a button eye like that.. I don't have the rose, so have to check with Lizzie.. 'Imogen' has blooms just like that but it's a much smaller rose.. I'm not sure about the foliage..
@Alfie_ I tie in longer laterals if I want to make them into main canes, if they get in the way or if they are at risk from wind. Shorter laterals are left to do what they want. They can be also cut back a bit when deadheading if needed.
From my experience, full standards are not suitable for pots. By full, I mean the graft being 1.4-1.6m high. A pot adds another 0.4-0.6m to this and the whole rose is out of reach then (plus the obvious instability issues). The trunk will not get taller but it will get thicker.
@Marlorena Isn't this just a work of art. Beautiful and perfectly formed. My 'Charles de Mills' is smothered in buds this year, so I'm hoping they will all start opening more or less together and not in dribs and drabs to get the full effect. Last year and the two previous years before that since buying it, I had fed it and mollycoddled it, but the bloom return was positively underwhelming. This year I've not fed it at all, left it to it's own devices and the result has been amazing. Bizarre.
I don't think your rose is Claire Austin either @purplerallim, I have it and my blooms are scented and more globular. I think of it as a white rose with a touch of yellow only when the blooms first open.
3 of my 5 water butts are empty and precious little in the other 2. It's taken 3 and a half weeks of no rain and daily sun and breeze drying everything out, which is useful to know I suppose.
A few things I haven't shown before I thinkClaire Marshall and Special AnniversaryBoscobelExtremely scented group here, Rose de Rescht, Blue River and Purple LodgeHerzogin Christiana
@peteS Very nice bloom Pete, I'm delighted you're happy with it now... I did once tell you to leave it to its own devices.. some roses like these thrive on neglect, unlike their modern counterparts..
@dabolem pink cloud is a littlebit spindly but I must say it is here in year 3 and it is really flowering well. I will probably say also goodbye because my OH really do not like the flower. And it is a mildew mess here for year 2 Guirlande rose starting slowly , in the back pink cloud. @Gertrudejeykllrose wow I really like your unknown climber. It is really beautiful and of course your GJ also .
@Molamola is it easy to train? They always state that guirlande rose is easier to train then the amour . But what is the benchmark of course. It looks really nice !
Guirlande rose fighting against mildew, blackspot etc etc… I just hope it survives.( I do not spray )

@Gertrudejeykllrose I can only echo others, your GJ is just beautiful.
