I love that rose.. does it mildew for you? or too early to say.. ?
own root 'Silas Marner'' 4 months after I found a rooted stem in the garden... sweetly scented too.
'Mrs. John Laing'.. has everything, except one fault.. it's blooms will crisp in heat.. otherwise, it's disease resistant, rain resistant - very suitable for northern and western regions.. wonderfully scented and a rich colour to the blooms.. almost hybrid tea like.. It is also without any large prickles except at the base.. .. healthy foliage, which is extraordinary for a rose of this type in June.. New this season from winter bare root.. this is the 2nd flush.. 'Elizabeth'..
Phew, full house of guests have now left and so the great clear up begins. Oh joy, the washing machine has breathed it’s last just we are faced with a gargantuan pile of bed linen and towels! Hoping to catch up with a ton of posts on here and lots of rose and garden maintenance to do at some point. Still mostly at the between flushes stage here but a few things emerging..
Mme. Antoine Mari is a defoliated, BS mess at the base but with some pretty watercolour blooms at the top:

I’m so glad I listened to recommendations from this thread and bought Absolutely Fabulous, I can’t remember who recommended it but thank you 😊
My replacement Malvern Hills is looking healthy unlike its predecessor which is heading for the garden waste bin! My unnamed rose which is still probably the healthiest and definitely most trouble free rose I have. The blooms stay on for weeks, I keep inspecting it expecting to see dead blooms but they just fade in colour. The petals seem a lot thicker than my other roses (mostly David Austin, whereas I know this one isn’t) and even if you give the faded blooms a gentle tug they still stay put. It’s been flowering for a month and I have only dead headed 2 blooms and even then the petals weren’t dropping! Can anyone shed any light on its name?
We had a thunderstorm of biblical proportions last night which, alas, proved too much for my poor 'Charles de Mills'. Still I think it provided a rather pretty parting shot.
@Marlorena no, the flowers on Dannahue last 3-4 days I’d say. I feel I’ve been unfair to this rose… I just was so disappointed that it’s turned out not to be Elizabeth that I’ve judged it too harshly. It’s definitely one of the most fragrant roses in my back garden - it’s reliably fragrant (sweet fruity scent with some citrus in it) and the scent carries in warm air. I wouldn’t say it’s a very elegant plant but that may be down to my pruning.
I don’t think I would’ve bought it, simply because I prefer brightly coloured roses, but I’m very glad I have it.
I don’t get much of a scent from Elizabeth… my For Your Eyes Only has more of a scent than Elizabeth… it’s a mystery to me why DA describes Elizabeth as being strongly scented.
@Marlorena I've took a bit of a gamble, I've cut my 'Charles de Mills' down to about a foot in order to try and make it more compact next year. This year, although it has been brilliantly floriferous, it ended up too sprawly and really too big for the space, and bare canes for the first 2-3 feet. At least I've given it plenty of time to start to produce new growth for next year's blooms. Do you think a bit of feed wouldn't go amiss on this occasion.
Re leaf cutter bee, it is cutting from my Gertrude Jekyll, Royal Jubilee & Morning Mist but not from Boscobel, Tottering-by-Gently, Sceptred Isle, Rose de Rescht or The Lady of Shalott!
Sorry to witness the demise of the forum. 😥😥😥😡😡😡I am Spartacus
