@crighton03 I've started to realise the roses are in pot are doing much better than those on the ground. Mine is in 3rd year and did not grew much. Please do post your Auguste Luise pictures when you can.
@pitter-patter Oh no, what has BdJ done? That is one of my favourites!!
@Rojas Will do, I was talking to my husband about this plant earlier and he was moaning about how he has to manoeuvre the wheelie bins around the sprawling growth!
@Lizzie27 happy birthday and get better, please, to enjoy your garden again. What a gorgeous bouquet.
@Tack wish you were closer. I would take all your bined roses and promise to never say a word about how they did in my garden. Tell myself that a different soil and slightly different climate might make all the difference... In reality I promised myself to lean on the heavy side regarding spring feeding in 2024.
@salo.daria of course, roses are highly desirable, but do not underestimate the potential of your shadier spots.
@WAMS we really like the same roses. Adore your Souvenir du Dr. Jamain. Hope mine will grow in its shadier spot vs all its predecessors. Unfortunately, that is the flower bed that is most infected by vole at the moment.@Nollie thank you for your sympathy. Not sure if much watering Kathryn will help to shoo the beast away at least from this particular root.
While almost every other rose rests The Fairy only starts. A happy pink heap. There is no way to train it. I just prop it wherever I can.
The new sun king still in its small pot is a busy bloomer and that scent, ohah. That is why I will never part with Chandos Beauty. Agreed it rests very long. But when it blooms...
Quite happy with the quality of my new phone's camera but still struggling with the right focus for landscape. Whish the lilies would be in focus as well as the phlox. And, yes, there is a rose in here. Right in the middle is Reine des Violettes which I cut back right after its flush. Its regrowing nicely. On any phone I had I moved to pro settings, ignored the pre set camera. That helped to get the right colours. And playing with white balance bar.
The dominating scent at the moment is lilies and phlox. Actually those two waft more than any rose ever does.
Thanks for good/birthday wishes folks, feeling much better this morning. I'm been reading all the comments about Chandos Beauty as mine is still struggling in it's current not ideal position in the ground. Contemplating moving it to a pot perhaps when it goes dormant later in the year.
@Lizzie27 Happy Birthday, lovely flowers your OH surprised you with. Glad your feeling better today. I was thinking of getting chandos beauty but not sure now with all the different comments.
Rachel / Augusta Luise is a horrible rose 80% of the time for me. The writing is definitely on the wall for that one. I also just dug up Birthday Girl and whacked it about with the spade so am not attempted to stage a bin rescue.
I plan to repot two ground roses next winter- Rose des Cisterciens and Gruss am Aachen- as it seemed easier to keep them healthy in pots (or perhaps the vendor was drenching them in radioactive fungus protection which has now worn off). That said, potted Gabriel Oak is a maelstrom of various fungal infections this year. It may be another rose I ditch
Amazing Day from Styles is very pretty just now. Styles have just released their new roses... incl. some pretty climbers, did anyone see?
Sarah from C and K Jones
Chandos Beauty... @Vh72... since you like scent, I really think you should give it a go. Not the greatest photo but it has the most beautiful glowing apricot heart just now.
And I have just found a surprise late poppy, ElbFee! A present from the birds? (Phone camera insists on focusing on the hoverfly, of course.) Fits in well with everything else at the moment since the companion plants are predominantly blue and purple just now.
Apologies if have shared any of the above in the past day or two... work + school holidays + sleepy wet weather mean I utterly lose track of my snatched minutes reading/posting here.
@Eustace I meant to say your Our Beth is really beautiful.😍 And all the phlox is pretty. I think I had one that failed but may try again- especially liked the lilac one posted by (I think) Marlorena.
Thanks again folks for kind birthday wishes. We're a lot calmer today!
@WAMS, do you know the name of the purple clematis in the middle of your collage please - it looks the same as the one in my bouquet. Do the blooms start out bell shaped hanging down? Not sure if there are two different clematises the same colour in the bouquet or the same one at different stages. One has small smooth leaves that look evergreen, almost like box leaves, possibly an herbaceous variety?

The summer lull is very much here although some roses are sufficiently confused by the weather to carry on or restart..
