In the interests of rose research I just went out to Penelope Lively in full sun (31DegC in the shade here right now, same as yesterday). It is holding up pretty well, just a bit of wilt in the petals as far as I can see.
Edit, just saw your post Nollie, that is mad. I preempted your request. Penelope L still fine tonight.
A tale of 2 roses. The climbers I have no hesitation recommending. Both pictured this evening with no heat damage to the blooms. What has happened to Strawberry Hill I don't know. Still plenty of blooms but also a lot of BS and rust. I'm going to feed it differently next year, lots of manure in the winter and a severe prune. No such problem with Blush Noisette.
A few photos taken of the roses in my front garden after sunset. It must have been really hot 🔥 today afternoon as I can still feel the heat radiating from the paved front garden cum driveway.
Like the rest of you my mind is wandering (read galloping) towards bare root season and to add to my collection.
I have already ordered Scepter'd Isle, Desdemona and Ghislaine de Feligonde.
We have decided to take the two Princess Anne Standards out of the pots by the front door and to replant into the ground, while they are dormant - and to underplant with Nepeta.
That means my two big square pots by the front door are now going to be vacant. I love the idea of roses framing the doorway (East facing) and looking for advice on what to put into them.
Idea 1. Keep with the pink theme and go for bush/shrub roses that flower either continuously or repeat. What are your thoughts and advice on either Reine Victoria or her sport Mme Pierre Oger. Any other suggestions welcome based on your experiences.
Idea 2. Go with a more orange/apricot theme (inspired totally by @Eustace) - again, bush/shrub roses that flower either continuously or repeat. If so, I am quite taken by Roald Dahl and wonder your opinions on it.
As the house is East facing, it gets the morning sun, but then goes to light shade in the afternoon. It does get some wind, so nothing that loses it petals by the mere thought of a breeze. Roses need to be no more than 4' high and same in width when mature.
Look forward to hearing your thoughts.
I also forgot to add the other rose that has started its second flush. Our beloved Gaujard.
@PeterAberdeen I am sure other forumites will be able to give you good advice about your ideas. I'm very much a newbie even though I have quite a few roses. 🙂 I have a potted Roald Dahl and it is an almost continuous bloomer. It is now in its third flush this season. The flowers are smaller compared to the earlier flushes, probably because I haven't fed it since spring. I think @Athelas has a very good specimen of RD.

@PeterAberdeen I guess you need either a compact or an upright habit rose either side of a door, since you don’t want to be attacked by long waving canes?
My Roald Dahl has grown impressivly well in it’s first season but wide and lax. It needs a good prune, another year and probably more than it’s current couple of hours morning sun!
Avalanche Abricot currently has the most blooms:
Lady Emma Hamilton, I would always have this for the delicious fragrance
Also Lady Em, never seen it so yellow! This one in the ground was burnt to a crisp and has been slow to recover:
Mme. Antoine Mari’s blooms have been shrivelling and burning in temps above 30c. Now it’s dropped just below that they are righting themselves:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Roses that captured my attention today: Weg der Sinne Lady of Shalott Pearl of St. Luke's See you in Purple Red Finesse Rhapsody in Blue Bordure Camaieu - new this season. Young Lycidas - stingy with flowering in this second flush.

Lovely, Eustace. Weg der Sinne = The Sinner's Hairpiece?

Is it too late in the year to fertilise them now when planting? I stopped feeding mine about a month ago.
