@Jason-3 Ok, that's exciting, you already have it...
..the best most reliable repeat flowering rambler is.. 'Alberic Barbier'.. white, scented, and a rapid grower that will send out long shoots from midsummer in the first year, these will flower the following year.. it repeats very well, and is the best rambler for this purpose.. with one proviso, it should not be pruned after flowering, [you'll lose the repeat if you do], but during the winter instead, when laterals can then be pruned out.
'New Dawn'.. pink... same as above, not so rapid but fairly quick.. 'Alexandre Girault'.. deep pink/reddish.. ditto alberic.. repeat is quite good, a few clusters here and there, but you must leave it alone after the main flush..
'Paul Transon' ['Paul Noel'] is another good repeater, but I think it's rather slow off the mark.. I haven't grown it.
@Alfie_ I've not been to David Austin's.. having seen so much of it on youtube I don't feel the need and if I'm honest, it doesn't excite me terribly for what would be a 3 hour trip across country..
Beales is 1 hour, and I love it there, and will go frequently during the summer.. they have a huge range of other plants, both outside and under cover, loads of climbers, clematis etc.. shrubs and perennials, annuals the lot.. I spend ages just wandering around... not to mention the huge range of potted roses, and the gardens - all free.
The cafe is a bit of a rip off for prices, but aren't they all..
I rather like the Giverney rose umbrella with obelisk type legs @Tack but couldn’t being myself to pay around 500€ for it. I should have just bit the bullet as trying to reinforce an inferior one is so going to be tricky.
If I had planned it better I would’ve knocked in a sturdy fence post instead of the ordinary wooden stake when planting, because that’s ideally what it needs @purplerallim. I remember your poor red standard!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Marlorena you’ve made me think. I’ve looked up Beales and it’s a 1 hour 40 min drive from me, I might go there around my birthday. The gardens look lovely and then I can then save DA for the half term when it’s likely that more roses will be out.
@agnasia 1 hr 40 isn't too bad, I would go for that... hope you make it there, but be prepared, it will be very difficult to resist filling up a trolley..
@Alfie_ That is lovely well established rose, I hope the one I have can reach half those proportions. The one I had at my old house took 3 years to establish
Thank you, I looked at Alberic Barbier alongside Paul Himalayan Musk. I was a bit worried about the final size. Sorry to pester but have you seen Kew Gardens rambler in the flesh ?
@ciaranmcgrenera my rose foliage is being rapidly devoured by sawfly larvae too, they seem to start earlier and increase in number every year. I do try and pick off as many of the tiny blighters as possible but they are already defeating me. This is my Love Song, all those white marks are them rasping away from underneath:
First buds on new Crépuscule starting to open:
Poor orphan Mme. Alfred Carriere really needs a home! The spot I had allocated to it turned out to be unsuitable (long saga). But it’s a tough cookie, ‘temporarily’ dug up and crammed into a small pot last year, but growing and now blooming regardless:
