Fabulous array of roses from WAMS, Eustace, Tack et al. My contributions are very meagre in comparison. So just repeat spam of Avalanche Abricot, my very healthy and only respectable bloomer at present:
And my best, longest flowering Salvia - So Cool Pale Blue:
@PeterAberdeen when I was choosing bourbons I avoided both Reine Victoria and Pierre Oger because they have a reputation as being martyrs to blackspot in rainy/humid summers. Whether that’s deserved or not I couldn’t say, maybe someone else can, but posibly a presentational issue for you in such a prominent position. Of the bourbons I have, fragrance is a key feature but fast repeat is not. If fragrance is secondary to a good looking, long floral display, there are probably better choices in the pink department. My two potted door bookends are healthy, almost continuous bloomers with a wafting scent, but are a profusion of small blush white blooms. No good to you at all!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
thank you so much for that really detailed post on Roald Dahl
Does anyone have thoughts on the pink options: Reine Victoria or her sport Mme. Pierre Oger?
No worries @PeterAberdeen, looking forward to your final choice.
I don’t know those pink options, but have you considered Olivia Rose Austin? The colouring isn’t as subtle as those two you mention — basically it’s shell pink — but it’s got lovely cupped flowers.
I have it in a pot right beside my Roald Dahl, so exactly the same conditions and similar attributes as well: healthy foliage, few thorns or pests, rounded bushy shape a bit taller and more filled in than Roald Dahl.
Mine takes distinct breaks but when it’s flowering… wow. Large, numerous and long lasting flowers, resistant to rain and sun, and a light-to-medium scent (perhaps not the waftiest) that I can only describe as “pink”.
I think many others in the forum have it in a pot; thinking of @Tack?
This is it today, taking a rest between flushes (Roald Dahl obscured behind it)
@Athelas is quite right that Olivia Rose Austin makes a great pot rose. Nice and upright I don't think mine has been without blooms or at least buds all summer. I think it might be my most continuous bloomer. First pic when it was huge in June, the other just now with much smaller flowers, but it is in urgent need of repotting, it's in a small potOther pot reports. Penelope Lively just now after 5 days of over 28degC temps, today is 32. I've only deadheaded 2 blooms in that timeFrilly Cuff x3 is back after quite a long pause, the first flush lasted ages though.
Probably the last day of Indian summer for most of us.. no complains here when I have to keep on watering the pots..
Lovely blooms all around and quite detailed description of experience with individual roses, which helps everyone in making choices based on that.. happy to be part of this forum..
And was definitely happy to see my roses not just alive but producing blooms despite poor care.. most had lost the bottom leaves but dint die completely on me..
On Rose de rescht, I agree with others that the leaves to flower ratio is not great.. but too early for me to judge for a 1st year bare root..
Few blooms in the last 2 days.. Tropicana.. among my favourite new purchases from Henry street as bareroots/newly planted.. strong fruity fragrance and good repeat..
Pacific blue.. purchased along with Tropicana but has not been as floriferous as the other one..
Charles de nervaux.. strong myrrh fragrance.. another 1st year.. but not robust as the tantau breds yet..
Elizabeth.. good repeat compared to Bring me sunshine for me.. the young colourful blooms are stongly scented but the paler ones after a day or two has hardly any scent..
Bring me sunshine.. colours a bit more apricot when in shade..
Emily bronte.. definitely a good bloomer after being stingy for 2 years..
..very impressed with 'Lambada', for its perfect foliage with no hint of disease, and freedom of flower.. not much scent.. 'Scented Garden'.. 'Mutabilis'.. / 'Sally Holmes'. 'Sophie's Perpetual'.. 'Lavender Lassie'.. 'Lady Of Shalott'.. Phlox 'Mt. Fuji'..
I'm now back home, so here are a few more photos. Jude the Obscure - such a heady fragrance 😍 Crown Princess Margareta Red Finesse Summer Song Crocus Rose Vanessa Bell Louise Clements - newly opened flower and a faded one. There is only a mild scent. Rhapsody in Blue now turning pale. Susan Williams-Ellis Perdita - stingy with flowers in the 2nd flush.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
As some of you are so great at growing potted roses I wondered how often you water them please? I am not sure if I have over done it as they are going yellow and crispy?
